InfluencesPatti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Stephanie Mills, Jill Scott, Late, Luther VanDross, Natalie Cole, and on and on! Soulful Vocal Stylings on KIMMY KEARSE'S " I Give You Me"......................... ............................................................................................................. From the time when she was wowing audiences at the Apollo Theater in the late 80s singing Patti LaBelle's "You Are My Friend" to her new solo CD "I Give You Me" , Kimmy Kearse has set a standard of excellence in singing and songwriting. "I Give You Me" has already drawn rave reviews and extensive radio airplay. One listener D. Stephens says, "If you like ballads that sound great, clean, and soulful, check out this CD." Kimmy Kearse shines with her own voice with elements in her stylings of Anita Baker, Mary J. Blige and the late Billie Holiday. She is the writer / arranger for all of the selections on the new solo CD. The CD is available at www.kimmyandklasse.com and www.cdbaby.com/kimmykearse. ............................................................................................................................................................................... Kimmy, born in Pennsylvania, has been on the stage since she was three years old trying to sing James Brown's "Say It Loud". At the age of ten ,she was the lead singer for her family group "Kearse" which consisted of her baby sister Karmentrina Schevelle and two brothers; Kevin Scott and Keenan Wynn Kearse. They placed in many talent shows in the DC Metropolitan Area, to include but not limited to The District of Columbia Metropolitan Talent Show Case and the Maryland Metropolitan Talent Show Case. They sang together for 7 years. Back when she was taken to rehearsals with her mother, who was the lead singer of a foursome group. Kimmy grew up with music influences from Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Natalie Cole, Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker, Earth Wind and Fire, The Staple Singers, The Isley Brothers, Dianna Ross and the Supremes and the Jackson Five. ............................................................. Kearse is also a founding member of the R&B Trio Kimmy and Klassé. With Johnita Wilson-Dillard and Gwen Wortham, Kimmy has thrilled audiences with their prowess in singing and stage presence. They plan to tour this spring higlighted by a Jamboree by the Lake comcert in Winchester, Tennessee and a 12 day concert stretch on a Greek cruise ship. All Kimmy and Klassé's CDs are available at CD Baby.cdbaby...................................................... ............................................................................................................ Review of Kimmy Kearse- I Give You Me Posted: 02/21/07 20:10:27 | Tag: Reviews Review of Kimmy Kearse- I Give You Me..................................................... .............................................................................................................. by Song Tiger Staff 3 out of 5 votes.......................................................................... ............................................................................................................... Kimmy Kearse has been singing since she can remember. When your parents are vocalist, you either end up hating or loving the music business. Kimmy chose the latter, or maybe it chose her. She's got a rich, sultry, powerful voice..................................................................................... The albums title track, I Give You Me, is a jazzy, easygoing song, which could be a real mood setter. The problem here is that the sax player, like a good number of soloists, doesn't know how to play tastefully. He or she is all over the tune detracting from the focal point of the song, Kimmy. Real instruments would have put this song over the top, the programmed drums and keyboards sound too sterile. Lastly, there are times where Kimmy is just wailing, and the engineer never adjusted for this. Her powerful voice is clipping and distorting. It needs to sound clear and crisp, especially when she is singing loudly...................................................................................... Wishes sounds like an old time jazz ballad. You hear sparse piano, brushes, and upright bass. It's a beautiful song. It's my favorite track on the album. I could easily hear this song in a jazz club in New Orleans or in Kansas City at The Foundation...................................................................................... ............................................................................................................ These tunes are smooth. If you are into Luther Vandross, Isaac Hayes, and Teddy Pendegrass, you may really like this CD. It is relaxing. Kimmy is a great singer, and has a dynamic delivery. However, there are some serious issues with the vocals clipping and distorting throughout the disc. The songs are written well, but can sound sterile at times. A full band can eliminate these issues. Also, the synthesized sounds are similar or the same throughout the entire album. Given that, it's not a bad album. There's work to be done, but I know that someone that chooses music, or has been chosen by music is always looking to get better, and does what it takes to get there. Kimmy definitely has the talent to get there................................. .............................................................................................................. A MULTIMEDIA COMPANY 200 South 18th Street • Harrisburg, PA 17104 • Phone: 717.232.8004 • Fax: 717.232.2415 ......................................................................................... ............................................................................................................. Kimmy’s voice is so powerful, she can improv with the best. She sends chills up my spine. SHE’S SUPERB! ..................................................................... ............................................................................................................... Kimmy,.............. Many thanks for the email. I played your cd at a London Soul Venue Wednesday Night and opened up with 'Which Way Is Love'. Fantastic choone. I also played 'Am I losing you' later on in my set (when winding up the tempo) and very well received. Nice when people come up and ask what you are playing and hopefully you'll get a few more cd's sold. This week was the turn of the local punters, small DJ's and Collectors (like myself). Soul music is thriving here albeit mostly underground scene................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. try www.starpointradio.com for some great selection of soul. Many Thanks, Marcus................................................................................................... ................................................................................................................ Just .50 an issue! Vibe Magazine Subscribe Today | Give a gift March 22, 2007 ....................................................................................... .............................................................................................................. Headed by lead singer Kimmy J. Kearse, female R&B vocal trio Kimmy & Klassé have been around since 1994. Their music is best described as urban contemporary/neo-soul with jazz overtones; Kimmy & Klassé are not straight-ahead bop by any means, but jazz is definitely an influence on the East Coast threesome. Kimmy & Klassé bring a long list of influences to the table, ranging from '70s groups like the Emotions and Love Unlimited to Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, and Dianne Reeves (a jazz-oriented vocalist who has strayed into R&B territory at times). While there are parallels between Kimmy & Klassé and 1990s/2000s vocal groups such as En Vogue and Destiny's Child, Kearse and her two colleagues are not as overtly or consistently hip-hop-minded. Hip-hop has influenced Kimmy & Klassé on occasion, but it isn't a huge influence -- certainly not the way it has been a huge influence on Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Blu Cantrell, and Beyoncé Knowles. ........................................................................................... ......................................................................................................... At times, Kimmy & Klassé inspire comparisons to Perri, a risk-taking female vocal quartet that enjoyed a small following in the '80s and early '90s. Perri was basically an urban contemporary/soul group, but they did have jazz influences -- and Kimmy & Klassé, like Perri, know how to bring an appreciation of jazz to an R&B foundation. One of the songs in Kimmy & Klassé's repertoire is Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart's famous Tin Pan Alley standard "My Funny Valentine," which has been performed by countless jazz improvisers over the years but generally doesn't receive as much attention from the R&B world. Tin Pan Alley, however, is not a major focus of Kimmy & Klassé, whose diverse repertoire has ranged from Kearse's original songs to the traditional "America the Beautiful" to R&B favorites like "Chain of Fools" (one of Aretha Franklin's big '60s hits) and the late Van McCoy's "Giving Up" (which -- like "Every Beat of My Heart," "Operator," and "Letter Full of Tears" -- was among Gladys Knight & the Pips' early, pre-Motown hits). ................................................................................................... ............................................................................................................ Kimmy & Klassé were formed in Upper Marlboro, MD, where Kearse joined forces with the group's two other members, Johnita Wilson-Dillard and LeVondra Attidore. Wilson-Dillard is the only Maryland native in the trio; Kearse is originally from Pennsylvania, while Attidore grew up in Virginia. In 2002, the singers recorded their debut album, The Love of Music, for their own independent label, Kimmy & Klassé Music. For two years, the CD was only sold at Kimmy & Klassé's live performances (most of which were on the East Coast). But in 2004 -- the year that marked the trio's tenth anniversary -- The Love of Music began to enjoy national distribution in the United States.
