Kimrea Biography

Kimrea's alt-americana style has roots in folk, nuances of jazz, touches of blues, influences of country, and pinches of punk.

Her songwriting experience spans an impressive three decades. Her debut CD, "Dream Dogs", released in April of 2001, sampled from a vast library of her original tunes, giving us a flavorful taste of things to come from this prolifically active songwriter.

Kimrea began writing, singing and playing music at age 13, when she ran away from home and was introduced to the guitar at a coffee-house in Elkhart, Indiana, called "Partly Daves".

By the time she was 17, Kimrea was performing solo gigs as a folk artist, doing the required "Top-40" covers and sneaking in an occasional original song from time to time. She played six nights a week in the ski country of Northern Michigan, between Traverse City and Kalamazoo. Her venues consisted of nightclubs, dinner clubs, coffee shops, bars and college campuses.

In 1978, Kimrea bought a one-month rail pass and continued her journey in search for places where she could play her own music. Ultimately landing in San Francisco, she became a seasoned street musician. Her troubador travels circled around the continent, via New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, Montreal, Cambridge and Boston, and helped in the development of songwriting that is inspired by an infinite variety of styles and forms of music.

In 1984, burnt from the hard life of a street musician, Kimrea disappeared from the music scene. She worked as a gardener, a secretary, a web developer, an artist and a preschool teacher, continuing to write her songs and testing them out at the local Mill Valley Sweetwater Open Mic.

In 1999, encouraged by her friend, the late Rose Frager of the Record Plant, Kimrea decided to perform again. After her first gig in over 15 years, Kimrea found herself at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley with a record deal, recording her first album.

Her Self Produced, Live, second album, "Pre-Platinum" recorded with her band, Dreamdogs, live at the Sweetwater, was released in September, 2004.

Kimrea's third cd, "Monday Night Live" was recorded live in July of 2005 with her band Dreamdogs at their regular (five years & running) Monday Night gig at the No Name Bar in Sausalito. It contains 12 exciting new original songs & was released in April of 2006.

Kimrea the Dreamdogs, Joe Lococo, Russ Whitehead and Joost Vonk are currently finishing up their first studio album together at Narada Michael Walden's Tarpan Studios. Grammy Winning producer, (Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin) & Drummer (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jeff Beck) Narada Michael Walden produced her song "What Do You Want From Me" for this album. It features Narada Michael Walden on Drums and Background vocals. The new album also features Hamonica genius Norton Buffalo (Steve Miller Band) on the track Paradise. It is due for release in August of 2007.

Kimrea is a regular performer in the San Francisco Bay Area solo and with her band, Dreamdogs. Kimrea & Dreamdogs are a versatile group of professional musicians, with an extensive catalog of excellent original songs and well known popular songs. Blues, pop, rock, country, jazz, classics old and new, you name it, Dreamdogs play it. The rich four part vocal harmonies, and solid musicianship of this tight little band are refreshing to hear.

Kimrea is also a professional artist known for her vivid watercolor paintings and her excellent graphic work.

Hey Kimmy-
their seems to be a migration to facebook, though I don't think it looks as cool for musicians. You can set up a fan page though.
