When Planets Explode is the debut-LP of Dorian Concept containing a broad range of individual productions who each have their own story to tell. Combine them and you’ll get a smashing album also containing the Benji B deviation classic ‘The Fucking Formula’.
Dorian’s influences range from the modal-jazz of Coltrane, the later experiments of ann-arbor Resident Dabrye to the soundscapes of Oval.
Although being labelled as an instrumental beat album, the tracks are everything but loop based. A great amount of improvisation makes every bar unique in its own kind and adds a very special live-feel. On When Planets Explode Dorian Concept tips the borders of Jazz, Funk, Techno and Hiphop after which he leaves you behind with one certainty… there is a new player in the beat game, which is here to stay for a long time!
The vibrant mix of pop, soul, funk and boogie by Nicky Guiland and Casey Benjamin, a.k.a. HEAVy, was first heard on a limited EP release on Kindred Spirits back in 2004. Although only being released on vinyl, the EP smashed it worldwide. HEAVy became a known name within the nu soul / funk scene after which 3 years later Jazz Money$$ was released on BBE. In 2009, 5 years after the release of the first EP, HEAVy drops their ‘First Sessions’ cd filled with classic and unreleased material of the band in it’s early stage. As to where Jazz Money$$ had some strong 80 influences, First Sessions returns to the late 70’s soul and funk. Including the hit single “ Do For You” and sought after remixes by Jazzanova, DJ Spinna and YamWho? A true must for soul and HEAVy fans, plus a great opportunity to get your hands on the remixes! Comes in a 6 page digipak.
HIGH WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM started production after the completion of The Life Force Trio LIVING ROOM. It was then, in early 2006, that Carlos Nino got to work on new tracks with members of Build An Ark and his other ensembles, (including TLFT.) Over the last couple years, he kept a collection of these pieces, knowing that they were comprising a whole idea that he wanted to express. One of the main things that HWALHF features, is samples from a variety of live and studio recordings he made. The concept, that the source of many of these works, was based on moments captured from sessions for other projects, was very interesting to him.
Known for his work as a producer of artists and bands such as Dwight Trible, Gaby Hernandez, Mia Doi Todd, Hu Vibrational, La Voz Sabia De Los Cosmos, and The Sound Of L.A., Nino is no stranger to sample based music, and has been highly acclaimed around the world for being the driving musical force behind Ammoncontact and What's The Science?. On HWALHF, he shows the continuum of his work as an organizer, producer, arranger, composer, and musician by mixing it all up into one hearty stew. With African rhythms, ambient, experimental and funk based electronic sounds, string arrangements, freak flag flying folk flavors, improvisational soul-jazz, and cinematic score cues, Nino has woven a masterful quilt of influence and inspiration. It is here that the collage of his very active mind gets to bloom, cohesive, as a record, and that is wonderful thing!
