Sounds Like
Kinetic has been described as "Electric genre-busters who create a heady gumbo of rockin spacefunk salted with jazz & peppered with reggae." Grab your spoon and dig in!
***Mind you, this is Kinetic w/ Ryan Cavanaugh on banjo and Meghan on the hula hoop, 07/19/05...***
Kinetic brings it...every night. Each and every show is greeted with preperation, respect and delight; inevitably summoning and producing the high energy, dynamic and uniquely individual (and geniunely fun) show that is now expected from the diverse group of rapidly increasing fans and is also new, fresh and undeniably entertaining to the attendees not yet familiar with the band.
Kinetic. has played with such artists as Tea Leaf Green, Barefoot Manner, Signal Path, GFE, Perpetual Groove, New Monsoon, Col. Bruce Hampton and the Codetalkers, Moonshine Still, the Recipe, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, Ulu and many more at various shows along the east coast.
Derek Cobb is the original founder of the band whose influences range widely from jazz, rock, jam, funk, reggae and more. Being the primary songwriter, most all other music can't be excluded from the list of what brings creativity to the fingers of Mr. Cobb, as any music with talent interests this guitar player. One can frequently witness Derek completely immersed in the music, playing out electrically charged energetic guitar work.
A driving, rhythmic energy is the best way to characterize Brad Page as he wails on his drum heads, often changing through three shirts in one nights show. Honing his skills through the torturous middle and high school band directors, drumming rhythms out on his desks, and loving music in general, Brad draws from the rhythmic Stuart Copeland, Jon Fishman, Dennis Chambers, and Mike Clark. As well as rapping and providing backup vocals, he also plays some synthesizer parts simultaneously with the drums. Recently, an electronic drum kit was merged into his acoustic set, further enriching the unique sound of Kinetic and Brad.
Bass duties are again being delivered by Alden Smith, which he generously and skillfully handles. As the original bassist for Kinetic, we are glad to have him back covering the low-end side of the Kinetic sound after his break from the band (which was amazingly filled by our long time friend Mr. Stephen Hopkins, who is now residing and performing in Austin, TX, with the blessings of the Kinetic Super Crew). So, we and our fans are glad to have the original sound rounded out by Alden once again.
Elliot Wernlund is the youngest in the group and the newest to the family of Kinetic. A friend of the band and a bass player (Stephen Hopkins) whom Elliot formely played with saw the boys of Kinetic at the Spring Fling of 2005, a show where we had our former keyboard player bail on us, and asked if they wanted a sax to jam with them. Always open to new sounds, especially when down a man, we welcomed him up on stage and have played with him ever since. The only member not native to Wilson, NC, Elliot draws his largest influences from the bebop legends, Charlie Bird Parker and Dizzie Gillespie, while also drawing from guitar players such as Buckethead and David Gilmore.
