Brett Johnson, bass player for the hip-hop group Atmosphere (2004-2008), who is also a guitar player/singer/songwriter, wrote his first solo rock album entitled, "Letters Post Mortem", under the moniker, KINGFIELD.
Citing such influences as Shiner, Fugazi, Shudder To Think, and Foo Fighters, KINGFIELD has created a stylistically diverse record that all falls within the genre of rock, but no two songs sound alike.
"Letters Post Mortem" began as a series of demos that Brett was writing, and self-recording, between Atmosphere tours. The songs were inspired by his battle with cancer, Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, which ended with him as the victor. He has been in remission since June 2002.
Brett passed out the demo recordings to a few of his musician friends, hoping they would learn their parts and practice them to perfection. (One of those musicians being future Lead Guitarist, Shane Baskerville.)...and as a result, "Letters Post Mortem" was recorded at Vaudeville MPLS Studios upon Brett returning from his Fall 2005 Tour with Atmosphere. However, for the next couple of years, KINGFIELD would take a back seat while Brett continued to tour with Atmosphere.
In 2008...
KINGFIELD recruited Jaime Gonzales to permanently take the reins on Bass/Vocals. Soon afterward...the search was on to fill the vacancy on the drum throne.
While in the process of auditioning drummers, the band wrote & recorded 3 new tracks with Jeff Halland. The final piece of the puzzle was completed on Sept. 14th, when KINGFIELD announced that Derek Jaimes would be taking over as the new drummer for the band.
On October 10th, 2008...the new incarnation of KINGFIELD made their debut at the Triple Rock Social club for the Blue Worm Records 10 Year Anniversary show. The performance was filmed & recorded for an upcoming Blue Worm Records DVD compilation. Check out all the performances by clicking here.
