generally being one of the more dull, stay-at home people I know and loving every minute of it; cooking (therapy); reading; getting my cats to stop waking up at five in the morning; sitting close on the couch with Sally; and various nerd activities.
Music
"Opus Mixtum" by Antietam--the best rock guitarist in the world, Tara Key, and her husband Tim and their friend Josh (a supple and muscular rhythm section) serve up a double album of guitar heaven built around wonderful songs both vocal and instrumental. Sorry to gush, but it's a great record, and given that two of my other favorites (the Dirtbombs and the Silver Jews) put out albums I really didn't like much, I thank Tara, Tim, and Josh for pouring their hearts into it as they always do.
also digging Fetchin' Bones, Old 97's, 80s indie (as ever), and some unexpected Stones.
Movies
Well, see, it's like this....if I'm going to be a book and music nerd, well, then some other area of nerdiness must be sacrificed. You see where I'm going with this?
Television
Yawn. I do like some shows but not enough to talk about them.
Books
Workman Publishing titles, of course. "Ten" by Sheila Lukins (cooking goddess) in particular. And a whole bunch of stuff I won't tease you with yet because it's not coming out until next year.
Heroes
Sally, my parents, my siblings, my in-laws, my friends. Also: Julia Child, D. Boon, Richard Yates, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and my aunt Virginia Carlton.
About me: proud co-owner with my wife Sally of Park Road Books, Charlotte, NC, even though I don't work there much now because I'm a publisher sales rep;
married to a goddess of Southern bookselling who reads five books a week and can sell books about ice water to Eskimos;
somewhat less proud co-owner of five cats (two in the video below have left us, Ira and Yabboo);
practicing nerd certified in the following areas: books, music, cooking, horror, D&D, and fantasy baseball
Who I'd like to meet: Seekers of the Ultimate Truth; all book nerds; anyone who says, "Cock-a-roach"; anyone who was saying "Boo-Urns"; motorcycle-driving grandmothers; punks; freaks; nerds; barbecue pit bosses; those who resist the status quo; those who embrace the status quo; Herman Melville; Matt Groening; Barack Obama; the guy who plays Dexter on Showtime; Walter the Farting Dog (or a similar farting dog); Sally, for dinner somewhere nice.
I just got another edition of Road and Track. If I choose to renew my own subscription then I can purchase a gift subscription for $5. Are you interested?
