King of Kong's Interests
General
I found movies through architecture, both because the creative tools for both disciplines arrived on the computer at the same time, and because a building project in Africa turned into a first film when I had access to my first camera (Hi8 at the time) on that trip. I never went to film school, but I do have a 3 disc float on my NetFlix membership.
It’s man against beast! Man against machine! And finally man against man; in this epic journey that pits two modern day gladiators against one another - in order to prove to themselves and to the hoards of world-wide believers that they are the ‘King of Kong!’
Picturehouse presents THE KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS, a new documentary directed by Seth Gordon, produced by Ed Cunningham, and featuring two of the most focused ‘athletes’ ever to be captured on film – the slick mega-star legend of the video game world, hot-sauce impresario Billy Mitchell; and the mild-mannered family-guy challenger to the crown, middle-school science teacher Steve Wiebe. These two, as well as all the other die-hard gamers vying to conquer the likes of Q*bert, Joust, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, make THE KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS colorful, compelling, competitive entertainment.
This is no wimpy spelling bee or wheelchair derby. There are no cutesy penguins here…Kong would crush them. This is rivalry, competition, enthusiasm and obsession brought to its most exemplary level!!
In 2003, 35 year old family man Steve Wiebe, after losing his job at Boeing, found solace in Donkey Kong. He began perfecting his game every night after his wife and kids went to bed, and not only surpassed Billy Mitchell (“Gamer of the Century” and Donkey Kong Champion), but ended up with a thought-to-be-impossible 1,000,000 points.
In the months that followed, Steve and Billy engaged in a cross-country duel to see who could set the high score that would be included in the 2007 Guinness World Records’ book and become ‘The King of Kong.’ Along the way, both men learned valuable lessons about what it means to be a father, a husband, and a true champion… discovering that you don’t always need to win to be a winner.
Seth Gordon, a graduate of Yale University, has directed several award winning shorts, including Squirt, Fears of a Clown, and The Problem with Percival. He Produced and Edited New York Doll (Sundance 2005, First Independent) and was Editor, and 2nd Unit Director of Cry Wolf (2005, Focus). The King of Kong marks Seth's feature directorial debut. Seth resides in Venice, CA.
The King of Kong is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for a brief sexual reference. Total running time is 82 minutes
