For the past number of years I have been hanging with traditional percussion styles from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa. But now, I am interested in plugging these beats into funk/jazz/pop projects; whether they be for gigging, touring or recording.
Percussionist Kirk ‘Captain’ Brundage has been making loud noises since he was a kid – some musical and some not. A self-described Indiana Jones of the drums, he travels to exotic and dangerous places to bring back musical goodies. Kirk’s first musical instrument was the Violin but it always broke when he hit it. Kirk likes spicy food, strong coffee, good rum, spirited women and no he never wished he played the flute!
But seriously though, Kirk is part of a new generation of percussionists that has western training, but immersed themselves in another culture. Kirk studied and played classical music in Europe as a Fulbright Scholar and then went on to play in Brazilian Carnaval with the world-famous Bloco Afro Olodum. Kirk currently directs the Music-of-Brazil Ensemble at UCLA, and is an artist-endorser for REMO.
