Wow so many influences. As a child I listened to Gershwin, Aretha Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, Broadway, Blues, you name it I soaked it in.
I love the writing and vocals of Kenny Loggins and his experimentation over the years with new sounds and lots of rich harmonies (practicing to his records helped me hone my harmonies as a teen).
Sarah Vaughn, Aretha and Ella Fitzgerald taught me how to really use the emotion of the voice to reach people on a deep level. Blues also taught me how to get the most emotion out of every lyric and to sing from the core and the gut.
Artists like Peter Gabriel, REM, Annie Lennox and others taught me the power that a great performance can have on an audience to make them think and also try to be a force for change and growth
I'm still learning as a writer and study the new music to try to understand what people are drawn to but the most important thing I think is that you have to stay real with yourself and sing what moves your own soul and write about the things that mean the most to you.

The joke when I was singing in clubs at 18 and they would hear my tape before they booked me was that I sounded like a 40 year old blues singer So for me I've always sounded like an old soul I guess. People often don't match the voice to the face but that is always the fun part of the surprise for me still to this day
Over the years I've been compared to Janis Joplin (when I sing rock), Barbara Streisand, Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks - depends on the song but mostly they just say I have my own sound so it is hard to compare.
You have to judge for yourself. I just try to take all my influences and be my own voice

My music is an extension of my work and it is where I began and this year is a return to those roots as I am back out and performing along with my healing work and looking for new collaborations to start to working on a new music CD.

Over the years no matter how much I tried to do other things in life spirit always calls me back to music since that is what moves me most. Good music that hits my soul has always made me tear up and cry. So I know when I write or sing if it touches that part of me then I'm on the right track What can I say if I don't feel it I can't sing it
"Sanctuary" It came in my darkest moment when I felt lost as an artist and ready to give up and then words spoken at a spiritual service I went to broke through and suddenly my spirit opened and this song is what came out. It was like a burden had been lifted and I was able to create the music I had always wanted to express and write it from my own spirit.
It is from my heart that I share this music with all of you in my special home here - my sanctuary. May it touch your heart, move your spirit and inspire you to know that we are all unique and special spirits with our own gifts and talents and purpose here on the journey.
This is the deepest part of who I am and my spirit and I am proud to share it with all of you here in our special Sanctuary!
This music is part of my journey and it is still evolving and growing. It is my hope to create the vision I have of a special CD combining music, inspirational words, meditations, poetry and healing words that can be a tool to help others feel at peace and open up their spirit and heal. I still have that dream to create this and know that when the time is right all will fall into place.
I began my journey into sound healing from my work as an accomplished singer/songwriter who was often told her music had healing qualities to it. In my desire to learn more about sound and vibration and its effects on healing I began to study the art of Intuitive Toning.
In my own healing journey through Hep C, Kirsten found that the CD "Elements" that I created to help others heal became myr own best tool for self-healing.
