Kiwi is the ongoing musical endeavor of Vera Sousa and Alex Tyshkov. Conceived in 1998 when Vera and Alex met in high school, Kiwi has undergone various shifts and changes over time, growing with their list of experiences and adventures. As members of immigrant families (from Portugal and Russia), Vera and Alex brought a knowledge and common interest in language and expression into their chance encounter, and the connection that developed between them has led to dozens of compositions, hundreds of performances, and a fire of inspiration burning strong to this day.
Grounded in roots rhythm, Kiwi invokes various influences in harmony-driven compositions and performances, sung in both English and Portuguese. Influences include the classics of Jamaican reggae, American folk, soul and R&B, Brazilian samba and bossanova, jazz, and classical music. These inspirations are reflected in the rhythms, melodies, and instrumentations used in Kiwi’s recordings and performances.
Often praised for their intense vocal harmonies and stylings, Vera and Alex, at times accompanied by a diversity of musicians, bring a distinct and original experience to listeners worldwide. The unique sound of Kiwi’s music is a result of the fusion of Vera’s sultry voice and Alex’s enticing compositions and arrangements. Young and elder listeners alike are struck by the way the music of Kiwi presents them with something familiar yet compelling, mellow yet intense, novel yet grounded in timeless foundation.
In nearly a decade of making music together, Kiwi has performed all over the eastern U.S., as well as in Brazil. Notable performances include headlining the Camp Reggae festival in Isabella, TN (2005-7), opening for Groundation in Canoa Quebrada, Brazil (2006), opening for Ritchie Spice at The Haunt in Ithaca, NY (2007) and numerous appearances at local festivals and community events. Making their current home in Jersey City, NJ, Kiwi has also performed at many local venues, including the Lamp Post, The Iron Monkey, The Keyhole, and the Waterbug in Jersey City, The Parkside Lounge (NYC), the Pontiac Grill (Philadelphia), Baker Theater (Dover, NJ), and many others.
Kiwi’s latest effort, Mischief Reigns, takes their unique sound to a whole new level, with a collection of unforgettable new compositions and musicians. The much-anticipated follow-up to their unlimitedition record, a combination of their first four self-produced albums, is due out this fall.
