Drummer Kitazawa Atsushi, also known as
KI-YAN, came into this world when his mother
was being rushed to a hospital by taxi. Born in
Osaka on January 14, 1967, he became interested
in music at age 10; and when he played the drums
a drummer. Kitazawa’s professional career dates
session work at age 16. He left for Tokyo in 1987
and while joining rock bands called Cobra and
Dogfight, he continued to perform for other artists.
After leaving the bands, he also played pop music
and jazz.
Since 2000 Kitazawa has been featured on
recordings by HAYAKAWA, a quintette led by
Hayakawa Takeharu, one of Japan’s foremost
bassists. He is also a drummer for various other
artists including Lay-Run, a duo of singer-songwriter/
guitarist Nakaido “Chabo” Reiichi (ex. RC Succession)
and guitarist Tsuchiya Kouhei (ex. Street Sliders).
If you like jazz or Latin, hear him on The Spell Was
Cast album by the Missing Link, a sextette formed by
trumpet player Watanabe Takao. Currently, as part
of his wide-ranging career, Kitazawa does drum
tuning and teaches at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.
