Influences
I grew up on oldschool grind and death metal, but now I listen to many styles.
As far as grind and death metal, my faves include Carcass (early albums), Napalm Death (early albums), Pungent Stench, Suffocation, Regurgitate, Cannibal Corpse, Cryptopsy, some of the early second-wave black metal, and Old Lady Drivers early works.
As far as punk and hardcore, my faves are Sick of it All, Dayglo Abortions, Hank Williams III, the Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Butthole Surfers, Ratos de Porao, and earlier D.R.I.
Rock and "other": Laibach, Ween, Tom Waits, Fantomas, the Boredoms, Mr. Bungle, Brian Wilson, Yello, and many of the early 80's new wave and synth-pop music.
I like some country music as well, though this pop-country shit being put out today fucking sucks; but I like Hank Williams III, Hank Williams (the original), Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and most oldschool country music.
I don't get into much jazz, the closest I get is various experimental jazz outfits and some free jazz. The band Naked City is a band I absolutely adore (especially Torture Garden), and would be the closest thing to jazz I listen to regularly, though some people dispute whether or not they are jazz; maybe I would call it jazz/grindcore/experimental/noise/lounge music, but at any rate they fucking rule.
As far as serious music, both acoustic and electronic, I like John Zorn, Diamanda Galas, John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Igor Stravinsky (especially his Diaghelev-era works), Richard Wagner, Alban Berg, Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Frederic Chopin, Alexander Scriabin, Modest Mussorgsky, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Edgard Varese, Pierre Boulez, and a number of other composers too numerous to mention. Primarily, I like Romantic-era and 20th-century art music the most, and especially the groundbreaking composers who ventured outside of the norm. My favorite fairly recent piece of art music is hands-down Henry Brandt's "Ice Fields" from 2002 (for which he won a Pulitzer as well).
As far as movies go, my faves are Redneck Zombies, Bad Taste, and The Forbidden Zone. Anything by Troma is usually swell.
My reading usually consists of nonfiction books revolving around various sciences. Currently I am on a Richard Dawkins kick. I also enjoy reading mythology.
I like music, I like to write music. Sometimes I like to compose dissonant works for instrumental ensembles, other times I like to get drunk and write cheesy love songs, sometimes I prefer electronic composition, other times I just like to scream into a microphone and call it a day. Right now I am on hiatus while I take classes and learn myself some more.
I have a wife and 2 kids as well. My wife is a lovely gem whom I adore, my daughter is the coolest daughter a guy could ask for, and my son is a new guy - just about 5 months now - but is going to be the coolest son a guy could ask for.
My interests are a many.
I am an atheist. Irrational beliefs in mythological flimflammery is a silly idea.
I have been called a socialist because I tend to agree with socialistic ideals, capitalism is not such a great idea.
I do not have a political affiliation. The "perfect politician" or "perfect party" does not exist. That being said, I strongly believe that social conservatism is not only based on needless ignorance, but is a disservice to humankind.
So you're attempting to grow your hair long again?!? I say, "go for it"...Nick has officially been a short-haired guy for a couple months now. Heh! We miss you guys too...how's the kiddos?
