There are only about a half a dozen people in Australia passionate enough about Yiddish to dedicate most of their productive hours to Yiddish. Freydi is one of them. She has a long history in Yiddish Theatre performance, and has been immersed in developing and teaching Yiddish curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Freydi is also dedicated to any opportunity to preserve the memory of the vibrant Yiddish-speaking world - virtually destroyed through the Nazi Holocaust. Freydi's interpretations of Yiddish songs are world class and when she performs, the audience knows that this music, and the culture it reflected and grew from, is vital, and precious.
In a world where an estimated 2500 to 4500 out of the world's current 5000 languages will become extinct by the end of this century, Freydi's life-work is is a matter of life and death for Yiddish.
David Krycer; Double Bass, Guitar, Vocals, Harmonica
With a twinkle in his eye and an indelible smile on his dial, David shines at every gig. His arrangements reflect his extraordinary personal musical journey through folk, jazz, blues, gypsy, French, Jewish and rock music.
During the day, David enjoys teaching the young everything from "Smoke on the Water" to "Watermelon Man".
David Breytman; Bayan (Button accordion)
From Ukraine, David trained in traditional Russian music and instruments, performing with The Red Army Choir's orchestra. Despite the illegal nature of learning and playing Jewish music in the USSR, David did so.
Since coming to Australia, David has not broken any laws in performing Yiddish music, though police have threated to monitor the speed of his fingers with radar guns. His talents and influences are Klezmania's and Australia's bonus.
At a young age, Lionel was attracted to the sound of Jewish music on the clarinet and has become recognised as its best exponent in Australia. His performances are as expressive as they are energetic and entertaining.
Being Freydi's brother, he grew up in the same Yiddish-speaking environment, and he has been infused with some of the same love of Yiddish as Freydi. When Lionel and Freydi sing together, their similar pronunciation blends in with that extraordinary sound that can only come from genetically similar and gifted voices.
Klezmania plays a mix of traditional Klezmer, Yiddish Folk and Theatre songs, Yiddish Swing and parodies, with a smattering of influences from Russian, Gypsy, Australian.
Their instrumentals convey the gamut of human emotions, and their songs are inspired by universal human experiences.
At concerts, between songs, Freydi weaves the stories she's about to sing so vividly, that the audience has no trouble following the Yiddish.
