The organic, textural style of Bryan Meyers drumming, along with a passion for the experimental, and the humility of being pliable, allows Bryan to shine in an assortment of music genres. Seeing the drum kit as a multi-timbral instrument and not just a collection of role specific devices, Bryans playing takes on a holistic, organic approach to music making.
This style is rooted in a love of all kinds of music and a desire to bring something special to every playing situation. Among all the friction that large egos can create in the music scene, Bryans approach is refreshingly adaptable and accommodating. Whether busy or sparse, smooth or angular, loud or at a whisper, Bryan strives to contribute musically to that which the music at hand requires and inspires.
Born in Southern California in the 60s put Bryan in a unique time and place for a musician. Growing up listening to Beatles, Motown and hard rock, he eventually became a progressive rock fan right when punk and New wave came crashing down. After playing for a few years, he began to cut his teeth on jazz gigs in Palm Springs during the 80s. He played a variety of pop, rock, jazz and orchestral gigs in the following years. Whether rocking out with local bar bands, improvising esoteric soundtracks for the Indianapolis Childrens Museum Planetarium, or supporting the tour de-force that is Mike Roe with his percussion/ kit drum hybrid, Bryan always manages to get involved in something that stretches him and diversifies his musical palette. Hes even been known to don a kilt for some Scottish Bag Pipe music. Bryan has also played with the Vineyard Christian Fellowship for over 15 years. This has led to regional touring and recording with a variety songwriters and musicians from all over the country.
Ashworth, formed in 1999, has become place for him to flourish and see his own eclectic style emerge. While essentially a pop/rock band, Ashworth has given him the opportunity to play driving dance grooves, smooth Latin grooves, slamming rock beats, and mind bending odd meters and polyrhythms. He has also contributed to arranging, programming loops and backing vocals. Having a local band to call home has allowed Bryan to build relationships in the local and regional scene, opening doors for other performing and recording opportunities.
Bryans experience includes playing live with a variety of artists, including national acts Mike Roe, The Lost Dogs, the Vineyard Music Group, Darrell Mansfield, and regional acts Ashworth, CA3, Paging Raymond, CM, and Joel Henderson. The music genres of the aforementioned bands include pop, rock, alt-country, blues, folk, country, jazz, and creative soundscapes. And Bryan has met many other artists while on the road, sharing the stage with Yes, 77s, John Mellencamp, Over the Rhine, Mandy Moore, Tobey Keith, Bill Mallonee, Avril Lavigne, and Junior Brown. Involvement with so many bands has led to recording opportunities with several of them, as Bryans name shows in the liner notes of Ashworth, Mike Roe, 77s, Matt Haupt, and Lost Dogs albums, as well as jingles and demos for a number of projects.
Whether rocking out on a straight four, swinging to a jazz number, or attacking the kit for a progressive rock piece, Bryan strives to serve the song in every situation. The player who serves the song serves the writer, the band, the aesthetic will, and the audience, and that is the sort of team player that Bryan fervently strives to be.
