..

Hello my friends,

It is with mixed feelings that I share with you the news that my radio program the Sideshow Continuum will be coming to an end on CKMS as of July 25, 2008. It has been amazing three years of bringing music and life stories to the air waves. In that time I have been welcomed and supported within our growing and exceptional music/arts community and I thank you for letting a girl express herself.

As you may already know CKMS will be defunded as of Sept 2008 in a referendum passed by UW students. I would like to express that CKMS very much will continue to stay alive after September. However funding has become the highest priority. The station will need your support in order to continue its survival. To find out more on how to help please visit www.ckmsfm.ca

My departure and the affects of the Referendum are more coincidental than cause and effect. I continue to be very affected regarding the welfare of the station and its role in servicing our community. I value the independent voice and by no means am I taking a step back from joining the front line in preserving our culture.

However my reasons for ending the Sideshow are very much personal. And it was a decision I have made after much thought and consideration. Until July I will continue to broadcast as per usual. Also, my program may or may not be going off air earlier than July for reasons of Programming changes that may be necessary due to possible program strategies that will serve the community best as a whole. I will be sure to inform listeners and supporters if the show ends before July. Unfortunately, with the lack of funding Live to Air broadcasts from the Palindrome will not continue at this time. However, the door are open for friends to come by, visit, share a song or two in Studio A. Please drop me a line if you are interested. The final show in July is already confirmed with a dear friend-Mike D(Jen Militia). A long time supporter of CKMS and my radio program.

As for life
after Sideshow? Am I up to something? (lol)
Well, Life, itself.
I have always had a need to be able to express myself, connect with others, feel something greater to our existence. It's been a trip so far, I'm anticipating that the view from here is even brighter with more possibilities.

Until then we've got time until July.
I do hope to see you along the way.

Always,
KLP
....

Hey Kristylee,

It was a stunning breath of fresh air with both the perfect blend of community and professionalism that honored the artist and respected the audience. The venue was superb and right for this sort of show. It provided the dignity that is each and everyone of these performer's right to have.

Please let the performers know that I was intrigued, enlightened, and inspired by all of them.

There is a beauty to the craft of spoken word that when it is done with commitment and care it is profound. And I have to say that all of the performers achieved this at different times in the night.

My standard of appraisal has to do with how many goosebumps emerge and there were plenty at your event. My other gage is if I can't help but comment or whoop or whistle or yell etc. And that also happened. Or if I go home and write myself. And I did.

Your headliner was terrific and when I said tell him chi meegwetch. It is for me the highest of compliments because it means much thanks in my original language and it is the expression of my true gratitude for the gift of his truth and his commitment to form which is the partner of truth. Truth married to form makes art. The work I saw last night was a testament of spirit moving through us in line with the world tradition of profecy.

KLP none of this would be happening without your commitment and belief in yourself and others. It is something that shines from within.

I really like it when I am gifted with such fruit from a tree that was not planted that long ago when you think about it. Yeah. :)

I warned you I can get pretty darn sappy when moved. Keep up the good work. Oh yeah great dress too.

With respect Heather

- PRESS RELEASE -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hip Hop Poetry Performance comes to Waterloo:

Four artists from the Hip Hop Underground come together in a rare presentation.

[July 26, 2007] – KITCHENER/WATERLOO – On Aug 12 2007, Move to Define is proud to present Real Poets, a spoken word performance of four Hip Hop musicians who will take the spotlight as poets defining their craft with skilled word play.

" The Real Women show back in June was a complete success. The response we had from the audience at Kitchener City Hall was encouraging and inspiring to continue to organize artistic showcases of our local musicians. This time around we wanted to highlight Hip Hop emcees who write and perform poetry with a socially conscious edge. " says show organizer and CKMS radio host Kristylee Palma, often referred to as KLP in the music scene. Back on June 1, KLP teamed up with the City of Kitchener to put on an outdoor concert at Kitchener City Hall featuring many women of the poetry and music scene including Jenn Pidgeon, Fatima Garsi, Charlena Russell, Hailey O'driscoll and rising Toronto R&B soul singer Zaki Ibrahim. " Move to Define", is the name KLP came up with along with co-organizer Dawn Bonneau, to promote and adovocate for the artistic community in the KW area. Many local culture enthusiasts were present at that show including Kitchener MPP Karen Redman, who spoke at the event.
" Real Poets" is the next show in a series of projects to anticipate this year in bringing exposure to many artists that are looking to expand their presence in the local scene. This show will be featuring three poets Titus, Dox the Doctrine and Sookdee, all from the KW area and headliner Travis A. Blackman, a highly awarded poet hailing from Toronto.

" Many fans of local Hip Hop are quite familliar with the names on the bill. But they're going to be seeing a different side to these artists. Musical backbeats and accompaniment will be kept to a minimum. The dominant part of their performances will be acapella. We want to create a vibe that will stimulate lyrical instrumentation. These poets have an incredible talent in writing on politics, world events, family, intellectual and spirtiual growth. Also, these four have never performed together in a show, the energy and excitement to see what they will do is very much sincere. These type of shows can only strengthen the social relevance of Hip Hop in our communities. In the mainstream end of the genre, I think the trend moves towards marketability and away from cultural growth. This show is bringing attention to the grass roots of rap, Hip Hop and the culture: The empowerment of Words." states KLP.

The artists performing in Move to Define: Real Poets on Aug 12:

Titus: A veteran of the KW Hip Hop Scene, has performed on countless stages and seen extensive airplay on 91.5 The Beat, CFRU, CKMS and CJIQ. His philosophy on life and music compels fans to embrace positivity and perseverance. In his performance on Aug 12, fans are anticipating the possible unveiling of brand new material, including some spoken word poetry for an up and coming new self-titled album release. http://www.titushiphop.com

Dox the Doctrine: A relentless emcee, known for stunning audiences with memorable metaphors and punch lines. As a lyricist he is abraisive, witty, humourous and introspective. Dox has never allowed himselfto be confined to conservative ideals and enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Hip Hop genre to forge his own "Sonic Gumbo". http://www.myspace.com/doxthadoctrine

Introducing: Sookdee: Sook uses his creative flow through various blends of Hip Hop lyricism and spoken word. Now currently enrolled in Fanshawe College's highly competitive Music and Industry Arts program, he plans to further develop his productions skills and business sense. Sook's writing is a response to life experiences that have taken him from India, England and now here in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Headliner: Travis A. Blackman: Author, Poet, Emcee and CANADAS FIRST AND ONLY INTERNATIONAL SPOKEN WORD CHAMPION. Travis freely bestows it upon you by clearly highlighting how media and popular culture has mediated between you and your spirit. He has the title of Canada’s first (and only) International Spoken Word Champion. After going up against 36 poets from around the world he came out on top. Countless venues have been energized. He has been heard by the elderly and by the youth in places like: Global TV, Second City Comedy Club, Metro Hall Square, Mel Lastman Square Art Gallery of Ontario, scarborough town center, York University, U of T, Ryerson, George Brown, over 30 GTA (Greater Toronto Area) High Schools, Dundas Square, CBC, City TV, Omni and Global TV Travis Blackman is part of a non profit organization called Cultural Educators. http://www.myspace.com/travisablackman
Move to Define: Real Poets will be presented at Caesar Martini's Lounge, 140 University Ave. West Waterloo. 19+ 8pm Sharp start time, $5 at the door. This show invites not just Hip Hop fans, but enthusiasts for poetry and spoken word performances.

From an inspiration..."Koyk - baby. You speak of my soul and times as nobody else could and you say what my soul hesitates to whisper. With eloquence you speak the spirit. You have forced me to grieve once again those lives and "lifes" I have left behind yet as you continue, I hope to force you into hope for that "something greater" that awaits you. I hear its heart beat, faster and faster with your approach - an old lover awaits you Koyk. The lover is your pen."

"How to begin? Let's be shameless. Be greedy. Pursue pleasure. Avoid Pain. Wear and touch and eat and drink what we feel like. Tolerate other women's choices. Seek out the sex we want and fight fiercely against the sex we do not want. Choose our own causes. And once we break through and change the rules so our sense of beauty cannot be shaken, sing that beauty and dress it up and flaunt it and revel in it: In a sensual politics, female is beautiful."
