Believe me, I understand how little attention this issue is paid. Admittedly, it's improving, but there are still SO MANY people that don't begin to understand this thief. Education about autism is going to be from person to person, in light of situations like the one you were in.
I'll tell you, though, if you have the chance and free time to go volunteer with the Autism association close to you, it'll be an experience that will, as my pastor says, bless your socks off. Nothing can compare to that first smile, that first hello, that you get from an autistic child who has at long last trusted you.
Unfortunately, I don't have any personal contacts up by you -- most of my related personal contacts are local to me -- but I do know of some very good organizations that I can put you in touch with, should you be interested. And should you be able to find it, read "Different like Me." It's written for a child, but REALLY shows the impact Autism has on our society. It's short biographies of individuals in history diagnosed with, or believed to have had, autism. The book is narrated by a child. His name is, of all things, Quinn. I'm not kidding. I cry every time I read it.
