About me: After the Great Wall of China had been completed at great expense and hardship to thousands of laborers, the Emperor decided it would be a good idea to have it painted. Everyone in the court knew this would mean more expense and hardship to laborers, but none dared oppose the Emperor, except his jester, Yu Sze, who ridiculed the idea so effectively that the Emperor abandoned the plan.
One day, the ruthless conqueror Tamurlane caught his aging reflection in a barber’s mirror and began to weep. The court politely wept with him, including the jester, Nasreddin. When Tamurlane regained his composure, the jester continued to wail loudly. Tamurlane asked his jester why he carried on so, and Nasreddin replied, “You wept at a single glance of yourself, but I have to look at you all day!”
In earlier times, the Jester was the lowest member of the Royal Court. While other courtiers and ministers of state used courtly manners, protocol, flattery, and strategy, the Jester alone used honesty, candor, and a bold tongue. He was the truth-teller, walking a fine line between entertainment and execution.
