About me: "Knives in My Throat: The Year I Survived While My Mind Tried to Kill Me" follows a turbulent year in the life of 25-year-old hip-hop poet Taqiyya as
she tries to "make it" in New York's Hollywood.
This collage-style experimental movie
blends intimate video diaries, startling interviews,
dramatic verite, animation and compelling
performance.
The story of a young woman interrupted,
biracial Taqiyya was raised by her racist-
behaving Italian mother, while she
fought against her urges to hurt herself.
As she wades through the fire of drugs, sex
and hard choices, Taqiyya balances
jubilation and regret using hip hop poetry
as therapy. Knives in My Throat was directed by Abiola Abrams and Co-Produced by A.J. Muhammad and Steve Nicolaides.
