Born and raised in Queens, New York, Knowa Lazarus or “K.L.” was surrounded and influenced by the various cultures and neighborhoods within the city. While he witnessed many of his friends fall victim to the streets, Knowa was determined to become something and chose a different route. The only child of a single working mother, he spent a lot of time alone and was forced to grow up fast. Full of creativity and imagination, he was naturally compelled to express himself through art, poetry, stories, and lyrics inspired by the people and environments around him. K.L. discovered his freestyle and rap capabilities by a dare from a friend to get on stage at a club, he fell in love instantly and began to perform and win talent competitions throughout NYC. He garnered the moniker Knowa came from a close friend, who basically told him “You know-a lot”, Lazarus came from his multiple ciphers in Brooklyn and how his flow and rhymes never “die”. After creating a buzz on the East Coast, K.L. and Q-York traveled to the West Coast and decided to transplant themselves to Los Angeles, California, where they have built their own business and currently reside.
K.L. is planning to relocate and return to his motherland the Philippines by the end of 2008. His heart and life were changed when he saw the state of his people out there. He is also an advocate for Gawad Kalinga (www.gk777sd.com), and wants to help bring more attention to their movement. His mission is to help inspire the poor through his talent and expand the Q-York Business to the Philippines to help create jobs and opportunities for the Filipino people. He is currently working on an album ‘His-Story’ with the World Champion Hip-Hop dance group the "Philippine Allstars", which god willing, will bring more attention to the country through music and dance and help uplift and build unity within the divided Filipino community.
