The Koan Loop Ensemble is a musical improvisation project. Their unique sound is created by the diverse acoustic qualities of each instrument in the ensemble, and on the technology of live-looping (recording what you're playing live and then repeating it).
KLE don't play "tracks" or from setlists; performances are totally improvised, and the flow of their music weaves from ambient atmospheres to rock textures.
Their concerts create aural universes with many dimensions, and the effect on the listener's imagination can be extraordinary. At times the music seems to come from far away - or it can be intimate and personal. This dynamic transformation creates meditative, resonant and dream-evoking sonic scenarios.
Since its inception the group's line-up has been based on electric guitar and percussion, but the Koan Loop Ensemble has also included horns, winds, keyboards, vocals - and modern dance. The artists involved are linked by their interest in composition, sound research, and contemporary musical culture.
Going beyond playing formal 'concerts,' KLE has shared their sonic vision at art exhibitions, in the streets and piazzas of towns, theaters, and even in the forest, matching their instrumentation to the particular environment in which they play.
Si tratta di un progetto di improvvisazione musicale, basato sull’uso del live looping – la possibilità cioè di registrare dal vivo ciò che si suona e ripeterlo - e sulle possibilità sonore offerte dai singoli strumenti.
Non esistono “brani” o “scalette” e le performance, totalmente improvvisate, sono un fluire ininterrotto di musica che ondeggia tra ambient e rock.
La qualità peculiare di un simile modo di fare musica è che lo spazio immaginario nel quale la mente tende a situare i suoni su più dimensioni con effetti sorprendenti di rarefazione, distanza o prossimità, creando così atmosfere “meditative” o “suonate”, dei veri e propri scenari in movimento.
Ogni concerto si propone come un evento unico e si svolge come un’improvvisazione concertante, in bilico fra libertà espressiva, rigore compositivo e attenzione esecutiva da ensemble.
L’organico è variabile (in funzione dello spazio e… delle disponibilità dei musicisti) e ciò che accomuna i musicisti coinvolti nel progetto è l’interesse per la composizione, la ricerca sul suono e la cultura musicale contemporanea.
