Koichi Sakai is a London based DJ, musician, producer and promoter.
Koichi is widely recognised for his highly developed, unique style which reflects the varied influences that have continuously informed his creativity and career.
His musical style is Jazzy and percussive; playing a distinctive and smooth mix of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Latin, Afro beat, Reggae and Deep House.
Born in Tokyo, Koichi subsequently travelled through Africa, India, South-East Asia, Australia and the USA. Having already been deeply inspired by global music and culture he arrived in London in 1999. Here he became involved with a night called “Bemsha” where Nathan Haines performed weekly for this Jazz session at Notting Hill Arts Club. This lead to the beginning of Koichi’s involvement with many of London’s most talented musicians and artists.
In 2002 he became resident DJ for a club event called “African Eggs” at East London’s The Spitz. Here he was playing Afro Funk, Afrobeat with a Fusion Jazz band, MDQ for 6 months.
In 2003 he began his own night, “Ghetto Lounge” at Cafe1001 and Troy Bar. Here he organised highly acclaimed live sessions with artists such as: HKB FINN, Robert Mitchell, Zena Edwards, Mpho Skeef, Lo-Tek HiFi, Lyric L, Belleruche, Shur-I-Kan and more.
"Ghetto Lounge” is now one of the most talked about, unique and popular nights out in London.
In 2005 Ghetto Lounge set back to Cafe1001, presenting the very best in Soul, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Afro and Latin vibes on every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month.
In 2007 Koichi went to Cuba where he met local musicians and formed the band "Los Auténticos". They recorded an album together in Central Havana. Their first CD album "Malecón" was released in December 2009 by Ghetto Lounge Recordings.
During his musical career, Koichi has collaborated in various clubs in London with Snowboy, Phil Asher, Patrick Forge, Nostalgia77, Quantic, Bugz In The Attic, Broadcite, Mr Bongo Soundsystem, Sofrito, to name but a few.
Currently he is promoting the event "Afrobeat Vibration" with Fela Kuti's Egypt 80 keyboardist Dele Sosimi since October 2008. His Afrobeat track "Ramaja O feat Bukky Leo" CD and mp3 is out now on Broadcite unplugged vol.3 Beats & Pieces. Click here to buy CD or
