Koko's been called "the Emmylou Harris of hip hop" for lyrics and a vocal delivery that hold weather. Her debut album, self-titled, was produced by Michael Philip Wojewoda and Kate Schutt in 2008. The songs in the player above feature Koko with more vocals by Paris Woods, drumming by Terri Lyne Carrington, horn arrangements by John Ellis, piano and organ by Chris Brown and bass by Damian Erskine.
Guelph, Ontario, Canada was a world of mixtapes, punk rock and hip hop shows when Koko was growing up. She went to elementary and high school with the Plague Language boys. Then it was off to Harvard to learn a different bit of talk, to read and read, and never to sleep.
And introducing Paris Woods: the true and the good, new blood too, but St. Louis, Missouri. Paris grew up singing gospel and soul.
They do what they do with DJ Victoria Blow mixing and mashing old vinyl into their originals.
