Kokolo Ensemble is a brand new 20-30 piece conductorless string ensemble, who has just delivered their very successful debut concert in August 30 2007 at Judson Memorial Church in NYC. Since the debut, Kokolo members have appeared on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman, accompanying the singer/songwriter Nicole Atkins, and performed for Japanese Ambassador Sakurai, at his residence.
Having no conductor, we rely on our own sense of strong musicianship, and the ability to play together with our strong sense of unity, to tackle some of the most challenging repertoire.
We have adopted the seat rotation system, in which we will rotate our seating for every single piece, giving all members equal opportunity in the role of leadership and that of the followers.
The repertoires we perform are all classical masterworks. Most of what we play are originally written for this very instrumentation, but we pride ourselves in always including an arrangement of a well-known classical work, originally written for other instrumentation (i.e. piano sonatas, woodwind pieces) in our program, something no other orchestras do.
In addition to our large-scale full ensemble, we also hold smaller scale chamber ensemble (anything from duos to 10-piece ensemble) concerts for more intimate environments. We call these concerts Kokolo Salon Concert series. In these concerts, we extend our instrumentations to include woodwinds and piano.
The word “kokolo” is a Japanese word, which means “heart”, or “passion”. We play simply because we love.
Thanks to all of you for your amazing performance for SeptemberConcert.org. The music made for an excellent and uplifting start to the day and we really appreciated your patience in dealing with the weather and related power issues.
It was great to see the faces of people taking a break from their daily routines to hear the beautiful, totally unplugged music on the steps of the library.
