My influence from the past is without a doubt, Langston Hughes. The passion, respect, and tenacity he had towards his writing is still admirable to this day. If I could have only a quarter of that drive I'll reach heights I haven't been able to dream yet.
My influence from the present is Jill Scott. I respect and admire her for being true to who she is. She had the drive and determination to overcome all obstacles while going for hers, and she didn't sacrifice herself while doing it. I will meet her one day and let her know how much she has influenced me, and thank her.
I have been writing for 15 years, and blessed the mic for the first time 7 years ago at a venue in Dallas, TX called Sankofa. That place was great. The atmosphere was definitely poetic. The candles the incense and everyone around me drinking some brew of tea. It was at this point that I knew I had found home in poetry. It was also there that I received the name Koko, an acronym meaning Keep on Keeping on, from my homegirl Fiya.
I'm a poet with the John Fowlers Good Time Poetry venue, and I've been a featured poet with the Jazz Funk Lounge at The Ice House here in Las Vegas. I regularly performs at various other venues in Las Vegas including the Poets Corner and Purban Poetry Pulpit. I have also recently traveled and performed at various venues in Texas.
I don't currently have any spoken word CD's or any published books, but be on the look out for one or both soon!
