Sounds Like
I am often told I sound like Buffy Sainte Marie. (I should only be that lucky). I think it's the vibrato... but hers was her trademark and mine is pure nerves.
The video below was recorded at one of my first open mics, at an RMMGA gathering in Wimberley, Texas in October 2005. I was backed up (as always) by my closest friend, Steve Glickstein... who always provided incredible support and encouragement to me. This song ("Caledonia", written by Dougie MacLean) will forever remind me of Steve, and I post it here in his memory.
I've been sitting around the campfire, playing folk music since I was a kid at summer camp in the late 50's and early 60's. George Britton, one of the founders of the Philadelphia Folksong Society, introduced me to folk music and taught me to play as a child. What an incredible man! Most of the music I have always loved (and still play) is from the folk revival era of the 60's. I am only a very amateur musician (in my real life I am a psychotherapist), but it's something that has always been a big part of my life. I enjoy listening to all types of folk/acoustic music, including traditional ballads, celtic, folk-revival, singer-songwriter, fingerstyle guitar, and bluegrass.
I am currently serving as President of the Broward Folk Club. And am actively involved with RMMGA and attend their musical gatherings. I have also been presenting monthly House Concerts in my home since 2004. (Check out my concert schedule.) These activities have provided me with wonderful opportunities to meet all sorts of inspirational musicians. Lucky me.
I have owned and played the same guitar since I bought it in 1971... a Martin D-18. I love it and it works just fine for me. I don't get much opportunity to "play out"... just the occasional Song Swap or open mic. I am only newly dabbling in songwriting (you can listen to my meager attempts). I stopped playing for many years... too busy with work and raising family. We've raised two wonderful sons, both of whom make me very proud... have a lovely daughter-in-law... and on May 12, 2007, became grandparents to a beautiful baby girl, Leah Victoria. My song, "Sweet Child of Mine," was written for my son in celebration of Leah's approaching birth.
Kol Isha... it means "A Woman's Voice" (in Hebrew). It has to do with singing... but to me it is also about speaking out, social action, letting our voices be heard.
On September 16, 2007... my closest friend... and biggest musical influence... Steve Glickstein, died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack. I think of him and miss him every day. Please read my blog about Steve. My song, "River," was written for Steve.
Really nice to meet you Arlene. Thanks for your friendship. Hopefully we'll get to meet in person.. in this beautiful warm sunny State of Florida. Michelle
