Bio
NEW ALBUM: WHAT IT SEEMS IS WHAT YOU GET – In 2009 the Amsterdam based quadraphonic quartet released a new album which blends all elements of their unconventional style into a heavier and more intense musical collage than ever before. The sound and atmosphere refer and expand on the earlier works of KONG where sampling and electronica played a less prominent role. Still the music contains a lot of weird samples and loops and maintains it's high groove-and-dance factor. For more information and mailorder details visit the KONG website. – KONG started out in 1988 and soon drew international attention with their unscrupulous mix of heavy metal, progressive rock, electronica, and the avant-garde - all of it backed up by extensive sampling and quirky sound effects. Adding to their unusual approach, KONG’s music is 99 percent instrumental, and performed quadraphonically, with each member of the group positioned on a small stage in a corner of the venue and the audience in the middle. With this concept KONG toured regularly all across Europe, drawing widespread attention from in-the-know critics and building a selective but dedicated audience. After a break of almost seven years bassist and co-founder Mark Drillich revived the band and attracted new recruits Tijs Keverkamp (guitar), Mandy Hopman (drums) and David Kox (guitar). -

Influences
NEW ALBUM: "A crazy adventurous groove-heavy journey of mind blowing rock, samples, and general whacked-outness!" (Rock Sound UK) ––––– "...the whole thing just cooks with an energy that's as elemental and from-the-gut as it is cerebral ... hard to explain, but easy to love, and highly recommended." (Blabbermouth.net) ––––– "You must be prepared for a progressive and ultimately groove laden experience before settling down to listen to it ... this has crossover potential to any forward thinking rock and metal head." (Metalteamuk.net) ––––– "No other band, at least none of any I know - succeeds in flinging such sledgehammer blows at your head." (Zware Metalen.com) ––––– KONG LIVE: "For Kong it's just another excuse to excel in what they do best, surprising the fuck out of you ... a drug-free acid trip that lasted the duration of their performance." (Rock Sound UK) ––––– "No boring experimentation here - Kong know exactly what they want to do, and it has something to do with screwing your head up (Metal Hammer UK) ––––– "Das totale Surround-Erlebnis: Kong live" (Rock Hard) ––––– "Kong excelleert al vanaf 1990 als een van de spannendste livebands in Nederland." (Volkskrant) ––––– "Het publiek wordt letterlijk omringd door muziek en de personen die het voortbrengen, er is geen ontsnappen aan." (Aardschok) ––––– "Kong bezorgde mij een van mijn meest memorabele concertervaringen ... het letterlijk omringd worden door muziek was zelfs een ronduit sensationele ervaring." (Aardschok) -

NEW ALBUM OUT NOW

MERCHANTS OF AIR
KONG follows its own path, as it has done for almost 25 years now. So it’s no surprise that their seventh endeavor Merchants Of Air again sounds contemporary, powerful and authentic. Several changes in line-up and a seven-year breather, after which the much acclaimed album “What It Seems Is What You Get” (2009) was released, did not detract from KONG’s musical singularity; like a miraculous mathematical formula in which varying numbers surprisingly lead to the very same outcome.
In the eleven tracks, filled with heavy guitar riffs, singular samples, airtight dance-beats and whipping drums that Merchants Of Air consists of, KONG shows exactly where they stand. There are numerous referrals to earlier work but KONG’s innovativeness keeps scudding the music. The loyal disciples as well as the new generation of music aficionados will feel satisfactory served. This is probably KONG’s most accessible work so far, there’s even a modest role for vocals on this album.
The album was recorded in their own studio and mixed by former KONG guitarist Dirk de Vries. Distribution in NL and BE is provided by Suburban Distribution. Worldwide, the album is available through iTunes and Bandcamp and several online shops.
