Mix the fluid and complex guitar rhythms of Michael Hedges, add a bit of Ani DiFranco's edge, and a range of understated yet direct and soulful lyrics reminiscent of Doves, and you have Katherine Peck, a young Oakland-based singer songwriter.
Katherine Peck is a mostly self-taught guitarist and vocalist who has been writing and performing music for over twelve years. Katherine's jam-based sound is rooted in aggressive guitar rhythms. Her jazz infused sound is set to smart, surprising lyrics, framed by fearless, textured guitar playing.
The San Francisco Bay Area native first picked up the guitar at age thirteen and starting writing her own music. During her sophomore year of high school she began performing her own songs. In 1996, she headed North to Walla Walla, Washington to attend Whitman College. After playing with the band Doppleganger for a year, she decided to perform as a solo act, playing in local joints around the area. At this time, Katherine began to create a style that explores bass and melody simultaneously. Her highlight performance was opening up for singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey at the Whitman Acoustic Music Festival in the year 2000.
After graduating from Whitman with a B.A. in Politics and a minor in Spanish Language and Literature, Katherine came back to the Bay Area. On July 4th, 2003, Katherine suffered an unfortunate accident while horseback riding in Gilroy, CA. She fractured her skull and severed the nerves in her brain that control smell. While completely stripped of one sense, the loss enhanced another, heightening her awareness to the tones and rhythms of music. She learned to blend catchy lyrics with a fast-paced, high-beat strumming style, creating a unique captivating sound that leaves her audience thirsty for more.
