I've been playing the piano since I was about nine years old and writing my own music for as long as I can remember. One time I was asked why I do this and what my motivation for writing is.
I love it.
I guess I just know that I have to do this. And for me, I can't think of any other way I would want to spend my time, or any other way I'd want to organize and express my thoughts. I've felt for awhile now that as a society, myself included, we talk too much instead of listening. Writing a song is like taking all that energy and creating something that people will understand just by simply listening. I guess I feel like I can create something and without saying anything, somebody will just get it. I think that would be a really cool accomplishment. And even if I knew I could only reach one person, I know I'd still want to wake up every morning to play and write. I guess that's how I'd define my love for music.
I've been making my own recordings for a number of years now and I'm proud to say that I've actually won a few competitions. In 2004, I was a national finalist after winning the Connecticut Reflections Composition Contest with my song, "Spring Rain". In 2005, I was a Connecticut State Finalist with "Heaven's Newest Star" which also won me first place in the CMEA Festival that same year. In 2006, I was again a Connecticut State Finalist, taking second place with my song, "The Eagle Flies". In 2008, "Love Told Me Everything", "When The Walls Fall Down", and "A Whole World" earned me three top five finishes in the Black Dog Music Studios Upstate New York Songwriter's Contest. Most recently I won the Woodsong's Singer/Songwriter Contest (Storrs, CT) with "Take Me Away" and "Look Me In The Eyes"
I feel very lucky to have found something I love doing at a young age and I hope to say that I'm still doing this in fifty years. Well, that's all I can think of to say for now so please take a listen. Also, feel free to post comments. I always love to hear feedback on my music.
