Influences
In some way or another by all the musicians and teachers I've been blessed to know over the years, and by the artists I adore and have absorbed, not in order of importance necessarily but roughly in order of what might be most obvious to people: Joni Mitchell (of course), Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Aimee Mann, Sam Phillips, Ben Folds, Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Michael Penn, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, recently, Jesse Harris, and of course, the Beatles. There's definitely some Indigo Girls and Dave Matthews in there and maybe some Bob Dylan and Joan Baez from my teen years of discovering "acoustic music". And I'd be lying if I didn't say that my earliest influences were Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, and Jem and the Holograms.
Sounds Like
I've been compared to most female singers you can think of, including:
Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Natalie Merchant, Alanis Morrisette (someone said I sounded like a cross between Alanis and Tori Amos), Edie Brickell, Jewel, Allison Krauss (love that one!), Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, and Maria McKee. Which I realize is basically just a laundry list of female singer-songwriters...I guess it just depends on what your frame of reference is. I'd really like to just sound like me. :)
About the album: Already Gone was produced by my longtime partner/bassist Mike Chiaburu and I. The bulk of the album was recorded at Stampede Origin Studios in Los Angeles by engineer Ryan Freeland (Aimee Mann, Joe Henry), August 21-25, 2006. During the sessions, Mike and I were joined by the incomparable Jay Bellerose on drums. All of the tracks were recorded live over those few days, giving the album the organic feel of a live performance. Keyboardist Patrick Warren added some of his own special magic from his home studio a few months later. Both Jay and Patrick have recorded with the likes of Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, and Ani DiFranco, among many others, so we're in very good company!
Ryan Freeland also mixed the album, then turned it over to Grammy-winning mastering engineer Gavin Lurssen (O Brother Where Art Thou?, Brandi Carlile's The Story) who truly optimized its sound. I feel that Mike and I really put together a “dream team” for this album, and hope that you'll agree when you hear it!
Hey Kristy, In order to support my musical habit, and to maintain my environmental values, I've started selling Toyotas at Ventura Toyota. Thanks for helping me spread the word! Hope you're well. Peace Doug Johnson
