Melbourne five piece Kristy Lewis and The Wretched perform haunting melodies on their debut album 'The Stampede' out July 2008.
Awarded a Victoria Arts Grant enabling them to record the album it features an all star line up with Laura Jean on Bass and Piano, Jen Sholakis (Jen Cloher and the Endless Sea) on drums, Will Hindmarsh (The Great Apes) on electric and slide guitar, and Emily Jarrett on Violin and Keys.
Throughout 2007 & 2008 Kristy Lewis & The Wretched have played high profile supports in both Sydney & Melbourne including Tim Rogers and Tex Perkins as well as keeping a constant presence in Melbourne's own local live scene. Kristy an experienced live performer, began songwriting and performing in Glasgow, Scotland alongside the likes of Belle and Sebastian and many other up and coming Scottish Acts. Live she has been described as "something warm, spirited a little sassy, intoxicating, whatever it is can't be taught, a formidable musician and a great songwriter." (Clare Bowditch)
The first two singles 'Stay Asleep' (Track 4) and 'Up this Close' (Track 6) have received rave reviews in the press including Single of the Week in Melbourne's Beat Magazine.
"Does Kristy Lewis sing in the shower in the morning? If so, one imagines her neighbours would feel compelled to leave random bouquets of flowers at her doorstep. What a delight this girl is. Up This Close unfolds in warm finger plucked arpeggios, down on the farm gritty electric gee-tar, piano that sounds like gold coins falling from a purse, and Lewis' delicious voice, all honeyed, sweet breath and a touch of the yokel. Kristy Lewis and The Wretched are a class act. What's more, if the b-side Forward Dance is anything to go by - a darker, more shadowy, yet tender lament - then her new record The Stampede, out this year, is sure to be a very, very beautiful album."
Sue Denham - Single of the Week BEAT MAGAZINE 2008
"Her band may be Wretched but it's unlikely such a fate will befall Kristy Lewis, who weaves a seductive country(ish) spell on Up This Close. Comparisons with Clare Bowditch may well be inevitable, and while they'd be flattering,. they're also irrelevant. Lewis is too busy making her own sound to indulge in easy sound-alikes.
Sweet Stuff."
Clem Bastow INPRESS MAG 2008
"Stay Asleep showcases a dulcet and sultry lead singer with a starry, countrified backing band. Kristy's voice has a beautiful cadence, with deep notes that quaver at the edges, and the soft sounds of a slide guitar make her a sweet companion."
