Memorial Day was originally Known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. The first Memorial Day was observed in 1865 by liberated slaves at Charleston, S.C. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, who was impressed by the way the South honored their dead with a special day and decided the Union needed a similar day. The name "Memorial Day" was first used in 1882, but did not become more common until after World War II. It was extend to include the soldiers of all U.S. Wars. We pray this morning for the safe return of our soldiers from foreign lands.
