DJ/Producer Kalim Shabazz originally made his mark in New York back
in 1993 with his highly respected Afterlife party. Back then
Afterlife was one of the few venues in New York showcasing
underground dance music. Best known for the diversity in musical
programming and it’s free and loving vibe, the club featured some of
New York’s finest DJs as guests… Nick Jones, Kim Lightfoot, Francois
K, Naeem Johnson and other guests came and returned often to display
their talents to an appreciative crowd.
From that auspicious beginning, Kalim Shabazz expanded
Internationally -- blazing turntables and rocking crowds throughout
the globe making frequent stops in Japan, London, Paris and Italy.
On the production side, Kalim was working with partner Nick Jones
recording history together starting right in the early 90’s with
their first release, “Wake Up People”, on Bobby Konders’ Massive B
Records (the record also famously featured Satoshi Tomiie & Cassio
Ware). Shabazz and Jones continued this partnership under various
studio monikers including ‘Moments of Soul’ and ‘Soul Movement’ with
releases on labels like Wave Music, King Street Records and Shelter
Records (where their classic Shelter track “Dreaming” was released)
just to name a few.
While his partnership with Jones continues (they’re working on an
album of soulful jazz inspired songs at the moment), Shabazz has also
been hard at work on new solo material that sees his music taken a
strong, diverse direction. Taking inspiration from some of the harder
edged and more electronic music found in the underground venues
across Europe and combining it with the deeper soulful music of his
past, Kalim looks to find common ground between the old and the new.
Electronic music with a soul. Organic and electronic music that moves
the dancefloor in a new, but not unfamiliar, direction...
