Sheila's Blurbs |
About me:
I was a “technical” brat. My dad was civilan and worked for the air force. We moved around almost as much as any army or airforce brat. Brats are special people, we had no hometown but we saw many places and experience things that most “regular “ people have never experienced at all. We had the special ability to make friends very quickly. Friends that we were in contact with for only a year or two, but that friendship made such a special bond that even 20 years or more later when we found each other again that bond was just as strong.
I lived in Moore, Okla until I was 8 years old. That is where I met my very best friend, Becca. We met when I was 3 years old and she was four. We have kept in touch and stayed close over the years. She is more like the sister that I never had. I love ya girl.
We moved to Calif when I was 8 years old. We lived in Rocklin and that is where my little brother was born when I was 9 years old. At first it was really neat, then no one looked at me for me anymore. It was all about him. My family has traditional Dutch views and the male child is the important one of the children because they carry the family name and continue the family line. Don’t get me wrong, I love my brother. I guess I was 10 when I realized I was concidered a second class citizen by my family. That is about the time we moved from the little rent house into a doublewide trailer in Roseville. We only lived there for about a year then we moved into the house in Citrus Heights.
When I was 14 we moved to Germany and lived in a little village called Hutchenhousen. Dad worked at Ramstien. I was in 9th grade at Ramstein Junior High then 10th grade was at Kaiserslautern American High School also known as “ktown”. After we moved to Germany my dad’s attitude towards me became very clear that I was a nothing and never would amount to anything. This attitude was strongly echoed by my paterenal grandparents who came over to visit us 2-3 times a year. I rebelled, oh boy did I ever rebel. However this time was not all bad. I made so many dear friends, that I am still friends with today. I got to see parts of the world and experience different cultures that many people here never have.
So the rebel that I was in 10th grade I had my oportunity to show how much of a rebel I was. Princible Killeon made the announcement that if you had 3 abcences in a quarter, excused or not, that you would be expelled for the year. An abcence was defined as missing 5 minutes or more of any class. I was outraged and with 2 of my friends, one of them was Gina Ackers, we stages a walkout. The plan was that at rollcall of second hour when your name was called you were to stand up and say “I am walking out in protest of the new abcence rule.” We had a student body of about 2400 students. Honestly we expected maybe 3 or 4 hundred students to join. It turned out that almost 1800 of the students joined the walk out. 3 or 4 of the teachers heard about what we were going to do and locked the classroom doors so that students could not leave. That day Gina was expelled, the next day the other person that helped plan it (I can’t remember her name) was expelled. On the third day after the walk out I was in the principles office (can’t remember why I was there) and saw the paperwork for me to be expelled on the prinicple’s desk. So I went to my locker got out paper and wrote a note saying that we were pcs-ing (my dad was leaving for another assignment) and I needed to withdraw from school. I forged my dad’s signature on the note. It did not match his signature that was on file. So when I got home that evening, my dad already knew what I had done. I should have forged my mom’s signature, I had that one down pat at that time. I was permenantly grounded by my dad. The only time I got to go out of the house without my parents was when my dad was out of town on temp. assignments. I did go to GED classes and got my GED when I was 15. That summer right after I turned 16 I was sent back to the states to spend the summer with my grandmother.
I left after about 2 months, I partied and had a good time. My grandmother had private detecives looking for me. I had been on my own, working and paying for my own place for about 3 months when on a whim I left town. I had one dime in my pocket, a fake Idand I was wearing bellbottems, flip flops and a cut off t-shirt that said “property of San Quinton”. About 5 days and 4 states later I joined up with the carnival. That is where I met my first husband. We worked the carnival until the season ended and then went back to his family’s place and worked there. We decided that we were going to get married, right after I found out I was pregnant, this was just before christmas. I had to call my best friend Becca and tell her I was getting married. She told me that my family was desperatelly looking for me. I had been gone for 6 months at this time. She talked me into calling them. I called my grandmother’s house and my dad answered the phone. I told him that I was pregnant and I was getting married. I then went on to say give consent or I will get married under another name and they would never see me again. He agreed. I had Becca and her boyfriend drive 180 miles to come get me. I made sure that my family would still give consent and my ex came up on a bus to meet me. That was when he found out how old I was and what my real name was. We were married a few days later on New Years Eve 1981. I gave birth to my son Oct 3, 1982. I divorced him Oct 11 1983. During the time period that I was trying to get my ex to leave the house before I divorce him I met the man who I would later marry, Monte.
I went back to Germany Dec of 83. I was there for 6 months. Right before I left I got a call from Monte who was thinking about making a trip to Germany. I told him to wait and we could go back together. I found Monte about a month after I got back. That was June 16th 1984. After Monte got custody of his son in Nov of 1984 we decided to set the date to get married. We were married Christmas Eve 1985 and we have been together ever since. We moved around a good bit continuing the brat tradition. We adopted our daughter Alicia in 94 then in Feb of 95 we moved to Ohio for the second time. Within 6 months we had custody of her twin sister Casi. In the next couple of years this tradation continued and took in more kids. We ended up raising a total of 13 kids.
Our kids are all grown and married now living on their own. We lost our home in Louisana and have been living in a 30 foor 5th wheel for almost 2 years now. I like it. But it took a lot of adjusting going from a 5000 sq ft home to the 5th wheel. I was hurt at work just over a year ago and it looks like I will never be able to go back to being a nurse working on the floor again. I am still in physical therapy and am waiting on a date fot 2 more surgeries. This saga is more in depth in my blog.
