About me:
UH STUDENT-RUN RADIO STATION CELEBRATES 40 YEARS ON AIR
HONOLULU – Local radio station KTUH turns forty this year. Most Hawai‘i listeners are probably aware that the station is a student-run endeavor, affiliated with the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Perhaps less familiar, though, is the tale of how KTUH came to be.
KTUH has humble origins. Its story begins in 1966, when, for its first three years, the station was little more than a committee of ASUH (the Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i), which both operated and funded the early venture. It was originally an AM closed circuit operation, reaching only those living in the on-campus dormitories. Greater things were yet to come, however. On September 28, 1967, ASUH passed a resolution asking then-UH President Thomas Hamilton to apply for an FM educational license.
In December 1968, under the sponsorship of ASUH Senator Ken Kuniyuki, ASUH passed another resolution petitioning the UH Board of Regents (BOR) to apply for an FM educational license. President Hamilton approved an application to be filed with the FCC for an FM educational radio station. The application process was gathering pace.
Student staff members of KTUH have chosen to commemorate the station’s 40th anniversary by filming a documentary on the station’s past and present. They are interested in speaking with and interviewing individuals who have contributed to KTUH in the past, such as reporters, technicians, writers, DJs, and performers. Those who have previously contributed to KTUH, and especially those who worked with the station in its early days, are asked to share their own experiences at KTUH. If you are one such person, KTUH is keen to hear from you. You can contact the station by email at 40years@ktuh.org.
