  • Bio

.. Kulia I Ka Punawai (Kumu Hula Association of Southern California) E hoopaa i ka mole o ka hula To maintain the foundation of the hula E hoomau a lkahi i ka hula To perpetuate the hula in unity E hoolu i ka oihana o ka hula To develop professionalism in the hula I mohala ka ikena o ka hula So that knowledge of the hula will flourish. .. .. Kulia I ka Punawai is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the perpetuation of hula, and professionalism in hula practice. Our members are kumu hula (master hula instructors) of hlau hula (hula schools) that span southern California from Ventura to Chula Vista. The organization fosters unity among the kumu hula, and a mentoring network. .. .. The concept of a kumu hula association is not new, either to Hawaii or California. Kulia I Ka Punawais collaboration, however, is entirely unprecedented, and its success has attracted much interest from hula practitioners and other cultural spheres in northern California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and even Hawaii. .. .. Auntie Clarice Wahinealii Nuhi brought the vision of a gathering of kumu hula to life in November 1997. With the help of Auntie Sharon Kuuipo Paulo, the Hawaiian Community Center Association (HCCA), and the support of a grant from the Fund For Folk Culture, over twenty kumu hula came together on November 29, 1997, at HCCAs fourth annual Hoolu Lhui Cultural Fair, at Carson Community Center. The gathering brought kumu hula together for dialogue on issues of common concernon practices of traditional discipline, transmission of core values, and accessing knowledge and information essential to the preservation of important Hawaiian cultural traditions. Participants were empowered by the outpouring of sharing that occurred in that first gathering, and have been meeting quarterly ever since. Klia i ka Punawai has indeed become a platform for open expression and honest exchange among kumu hula who are dedicated to perpetuating hula traditions with dignity and integrity. .. .. The Associations four-fold missionof maintaining the foundations of hula, perpetuating hula in unity, developing professionalism, and strengthening knowledge and understanding of hulainfuses its various activities. Workshops held during quarterly gatherings of focus on educational activities that benefit and augment members knowledge base of hula. Performance presentations are opportunities for students from different halau to expand their experiences through sharing repertoire, and through performing in a wide range of theater and festival venues. .. .. Our first full-length concert production in April 2004 marked a new pinnacle of collaboration. Fifteen schools collaborated on a program honoring King David Kalkaua, who ruled from 1874 to 1891. The centerpiece of the production was the staging of a set of fifteen compositions composed in 1886 to commemorate King Kalkauas birthday jubilee, celebrated on Nov. 16. This set, titled He Inoa Iubile No Kalani, was published in Ka Nupepa Elele, on December 11 and December 18, 1886. While individual pieces within this set have been presented over the years, our concert presented the set onstage in its entirety, as envisioned by the poets who created the set in 1886. For our concert, the mele were resurrected from Ka Nupepa Elele, and set anew by each of the kumu hula. Other pieces on the program were the result of collaborative sharing of choreography and staging to a degree unprecedented in the hula community. .. .. Our second full-length concert production took place on April 8, 2006. The program "He Lei No Kapi'olani" honored Queen Kapiolani, wife of King David Kalkaua. Our preparations combined the resurrection of archival resources with spirited collaboration in creating and sharing repertoire among the participating hlau. Narration for this concert was entirely bilingual. Hawaiian narration was provided by Kumu Hula Karen Kealoha Finneran-Swatek, a Punawai member completing a B.A. degree in Hawaiian Language at University of Hawai'i, Hilo. .. Through the efforts of n kumu hula of Kulia i ka Punawai, a rich historical legacy preserved in hula shall flourish in southern California. .. .. .. ........ .......... .................................................................................................... .. .. .. .. .. .. ......
