In 1982, Kurtis Matthews began his stand-up career at the Comedy Store in Hollywood. In 1984, he embarked upon his own journey in recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction after a near fatal automobile accident caused him to look for a new way of life. Soon he would become a regular at the World Famous Improv and begin touring nationally along side renowned performers and comedy veterans as Bill Hicks, Sam Kinison and George Lopez, he learned firsthand the joys of making people laugh as well as the challenges of staying clean and sober while doing so.
After twelve years of touring as a stand-up, appearing on national television and numerous radio shows, Kurtis took a five year break from comedy shortly after his friend and mentor, Bill Hicks, passed away unexpectedly. Leaving stand up and show biz behind Kurtis moved to San Francisco, got married and worked his way up to a management position in the software industry, providing him with the knowledge, determination and experience to start his own company. Although he enjoyed software, stand up and speaking the truth onstage had never left his heart. One day, he wrote the words ..comedy school.. on a napkin. Soon afterwards, Kurtis started the San Francisco Comedy College (SFCC) when an actor friend asked him if he could teach him to be funny.
Over the past eight years, the SFCC has grown to become the largest stand-up school in the country, training over 2,000 people to be funny with classes in stand-up, improv, one-person shows and comedy writing. In 2006, HBO came to the SFCC to showcase comedians for its annual US Arts Comedy Festival in Aspen, marking the first time the network, nationally renowned for its comedy programming, scouted for talent at a comedy school. 2006 was also the first year that the Late Show with David Letterman held auditions for upcoming episodes at the SFCC, solidifying their role as the most sought-after comedy training in the country. The success of the SFCC is largely due to the founder..s philosophy of being true to oneself onstage, supporting fellow comedians, loving stand-up and sharing that love and recovery with the audience.
Drawing upon his own life experiences to enrich his material with stories about his own struggles with therapy, infidelity, alcohol, drugs and getting sane, Kurtis continues to perform stand-up comedy, making audiences laugh and inspiring them to be the best people they can be.
