About me: I was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, but moved frequently, and lived in places as varied as Brasilia, Brazil; Monrovia, Liberia; Hays, Kansas; Orono, Maine; and Grand Forks, North Dakota. I’m reasonably sure I’m the only person to live in all of the places I’ve lived.
I’ve been writing most of my life, but decided about five years ago to focus exclusively on stories for children and young adults. My debut novel, Mudville, was published in 2009 by Knopf. My next novel, Mamba Point, will also be published by Knopf.
I also work at a university, helping instructors teach with technology. I live in Minneapolis with my wife, Angela, and our five cats: Gilda, Torii, Bertie, Lucy, and Pippi.
Who I'd like to meet: Old friends, other writers (& readers) of kids books
