TIME WARP RETURNS!!! In 1983, “New York” Vinnie Richichi met JD Smith at a newly formed radio station consisting of what might be described as the last gasp for underground radio in San Francisco. The station was KKCY-FM, subtitled, “The City”. It contained remnants and music from the mid sixties and broadcast a lot of new local live bands and talent that was happening around the bay area at the time. Radio was in a confused, if not plain wierd transition at the time coming out of a punk era, grunge hopefuls and whatever new musics and labels were happening at the time in 1983. Vinnie was from New York, in fact having gone to the same high school as JD’s then current housemate. JD was from across the river in New Jersey. Vinnie got a chance to produce his own radio show in San Francisco on KUSF-FM, the University of San Francisco’s mother broadcast service for the bay area and asked JD if he wanted to co-host the show. JD, having worked at no less than 16 radio stations up until that time jumped at the chance. Vinnie became “New York” Vinnie and JD, not to piss the Vin off, but if anything to compliment him and the show, became “Jersey JD.” Thus was the beginning of this new radio show - “Time Warp”. Vinnie set the format as an “oldies” show, primarilly playing hits and great rock n’ roll rarities from the 50s through the 60s. After a year of this, JD spread his knowledge and own library to slowly go into the 70s and even a very few new 80s songs mostly from classic stars and bands from the 50s and 60s. The show went on for another 5 years until Vinnie, who couldn’t find a high rank radio job in the bay area made the move to Seattle and within just a couple of years to the present has become something of a legend up in that area, mainly in his expertise as a sports and talk show oriented announcer. With his bold looks and that hard New York accent, just about everyone knows “New York” Vinnie. JD knows what most of the commercial radio and public radio station office slugs don’t know, and THAT is: Vinnie is the greatest extroverted radio announcer in the country.......still is. When Vinnie left, the producer’s chair was open to JD. But JD, being a full time musician couldn’t take the responsibility of that position. That went to one of the other co-hosts who had hopped .. a couple of years of the show’s existence. That man was Bob “Road Dog” Grundy. At the time, the hosts were JD and another newcomer to the scene, Dave Kitagawa, who a few years later took on the moniker of “Doctor Midnight”. Since Dave basically always seemed to burn the candle at both ends, the title was fitting. “ Road Dog” Bob, however, changed the name of the show to “The Blue Moon,” leaning more towards a blues format. Since the bay area didn’t have a blues show at the time (with the possible exception of KPOO), it was a fitting name. For the first few years most of the format of the show was slanted towards this. Besides JD and Dave doing the co-hosting, famed radio announcer from the LA 60s and the San Francisco 70s, Bobby Dale often sat in on these shows, improving the quality on these rare times by 200%. (Not kidding!) Bobby was a natural and started with KKCY until that station collapsed into James Gabbert’s KOFY-FM station. JD considered Bobby Dale the funniest and hippest of all the DJs he’d ever met, heard or worked with, with the possible exception of John Zacherle in New York. Bobby, in the mid 60s, was solely responsible for putting the original Byrds and Doors on the airwaves in Los Angeles. He’s even mentioned on the back of the first Byrds album, “Mr. Tamborine Man”. “The Blue Moon” went along smoothly for the next 5 years or so, and then another change came about. Bob was to take a badly needed break from radio and the limelight. So once again, the producer’s spot could have gone to JD. But because he was still so emersed in local gigging, that spot fell to the only person who could keep the show alive, and that was Dave Kitagawa, alias “Doctor Midnight.” From 1993 Doctor Midnight was the producer of “The Blue Moon.” The show once again moved to a slightly different format of what might be called a mixture of classic rock’n roll to progressive rock. The show was strongly highlighted by frequent airings of the Beach Boys, Michael Nesmith, the Byrds, Gene Clark and Dave’s favorite band, NRBQ. JD, the lover of jazz, would play some blues and an almost equal amount of jazz to fill in the holes that Curtis Huth, (alias “Miles Mallough,” the host of the show before “The Blue Moon”) left before moving on. And so JD brought a more focussed feel for San Francisco’s naughtly and wild North Beach. The odd thing was that around that same time in the mid 90s the only full time jazz station: KJAZ, (which became CCSM-FM out of the college of San Mateo) had a blues show on Friday nights from 9PM till midnight. So there was less reason for a blues show after that one. The move back to “Time Warp” is now a manifested reality, as suggested by our long time good friend (now passed, but always remembered) Dave Kitigawa. JD and Kimberly Smith have taken over as producers of the show. Carry on, oh warped ones! -April 3, 2007.
