About me:
Big dreams from a small town are both remarkable and humbling, just ask P-Funk superstar, George Clinton, Brooklyn Dodger, Joe Black, actor Dudley Moore, and now, actor Kwame Patterson. All products of the small 6’square mile city of Plainfield, NJ.
Kwame Patterson was born February 17, 1977 in Atlanta, GA, but was raised in Plainfield, NJ, by his mom, his dad passed at an early age but was a big part of his life until then. He left the city of Plainfield as a teenager to avoid the snares of the streets. Kwame Patterson witnessed first hand the devastating effect that drugs and poverty had on his community. In 1994, Patterson was in his junior year at Plainfield High School when he decided to move to Baltimore to be with his mother. “I was getting in a lot of trouble," he stated. Although he turned his life around, his knowledge of urban life proved an asset as acting opportunities arose. After completing his high school credits and serving two years in the army as a “fire direction control specialist” in Fort Sill, OK. Patterson left the army and aimed for a modeling career, doing local fashion shows with Travis Winky, Earl Banister, and many more.
But, the stage soon replaced the runway after Baltimore comedian Howard G’ called on him to take part as a lead in a stage play, “As Cherry Hill Turns”, the comic’s play about city life, Patterson played “Mike-Mike. Then his career took on yet another turn. Spotted by Baltimore casting director, Pat Moran, Patterson auditioned for HBO’s series, “The Wire” and landed the role of ‘Monk’, portraying a drug lord’s lieutenant. The role was for one day. “The excitement I felt walking on that set was life changing and very powerful”. That ‘one day’ turned into an additional sixteen episodes and a total of 2 seasons! Now an actor, he portrays "Monk", a drug lord’s lieutenant, in new episodes of HBO’s “The Wire” set in the streets of Baltimore. ‘
The Wire’ has helped build a loyal fan base for Patterson, also starring in several independent/DVD films, including, “He Can Get It”. “
Patterson recently relocated to Los Angeles and immediately landed a role on the FX hit show “The Shield”. And a supporting role in a feature film starring Wood Harris called “4-LIFE. .
Just as he reinvented himself by moving to Baltimore, Patterson feels his move to L.A will give him a new direction and more positive roles. Patterson moved to Los Angeles recently to study and continue his dream”, auditing and fine tuning his craft, gives all praises to God for this spiritual journey. Quoting his role model, Denzel Washington, “We do what we gotta do so we can do what we wanna do” Kwame Patterson…..all eyes are on you! Patterson loves children and wants to
work with more programs that encourage young people,to look
beyond their perceived limitations. He believes that where you live or grew up should not affect your determination to achieve.
