INTERNATIONAL:
Having done a couple of European tours in countries like France, Belgium, Netherlands, which has become the band’s second home, Bosnia-Herzegovina, where they performed to roaring crowds and a few African countries such as Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Lesotho and Cape Verde, Kwani Experience is proving to be one of the greatest South African exports. These tours have provided Kwani with a great platform to spread their wings internationally promoting their recently released second album LIVE AFTER BIRTH and spreading the message for their Social campaign titled ‘LIVE WITHOUT FEAR’.
WHO IS KWANI EXPERIENCE?:
KWANI EXPERIENCE is a 6-piece live band hailing from the inner city of Johannesburg - gritty yet sophisticated with a distinct edge in their attitude, their messages, their look and their sound. KWANI EXP or K.E. certainly yet creating another stir with this new release as they did with their debut album- “The Birth of the Mudaland Funk”.
Think successful, entertaining, liberating, hip, musical-journey, African Urban Culture, post-apartheid, motivational, educational, South African cultural transition and [re-] evolution; think KWANI EXPERIENCE – this is what the band is, and represents, in no uncertain terms.
Kwani’s unique and eclectic sound is no less difficult to pigeon-hole and categorise now, as ever, with elements of funk, jazz (traditional, African and acid), soul, hip-hop, African traditional, African urban and African pop genres all coming into play in an exciting and groundbreaking mix and accessible wall of sound.
The band members all have different identities, styles and areas of expertise. Kwani comprises: a soulful actress/lead female vocalist (Nkoto Keitu Malebye) coupled with lead rapper/poet (Kwelagobe Sekele); behind them we have an industrial-percussionist (recycled & light percussions) (Bafana Nhlapo), drummer (Monde Mkhizwana), bassist (Frank Magongwa), second percussionist on congas, bongos and djembe (Gontse Makhene) and keyboardist (Mahlatse Riba). A truly unique visual feast aside to the musical one already described!
THE HISTORY:
Winners of the STANDARD BANK/ KAYA fm 95.9/SHEER SOUND “Totally Jazzed” showcase in late 2004, (which is also the year the band was established) won the contest because of their innovation, fresh ideas and concepts; the band is now signed to record company Sheer Sound.
The KWANI EXPERIENCE educates, elevates and entertains both young and the old, pays tribute to their legacy and heritage and chants the future. They label their overall style and musical style, MUDALAND FUNK.
