Memphis, Tennessee has given birth to the careers of Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and B.B. King. They were all hailed as legends in their respective genres. Now, an emerging artist in K.y.D. has the makings of legendary Hip–Hop artist all over him.
Born Christopher White, the 26 year-old artist has been involved with Hip-Hop since he was 12 years old when his creativity and love of poetry led him to use karaoke machines to produce full length recordings over various industry instrumentals. This helped develop his international style.
Participating in ciphers in his Raleigh neighborhood, K.y.D. developed the gift of cunning lyrics over a smooth delivery and began receiving notoriety amongst high-school classmates and local listeners. He knew that he needed to reach a broader audience, so with limited funds, and nothing else to lose, he worked hard at two jobs while in high school to purchase equipment to produce and record songs.
K.y.D. began to flourish as a noted emcee in the city, but also was downplayed because of the fact that he didn’t sound anything like the traditional artists that came before him in Memphis. “I’ve always been different from most” he says, “I think people like change whenever it’s a good change and I’m all about being unique. I think a lot of new artists feel like to be somebody, you have to be a new version of somebody. I’m just interested in being me.”
K.y.D. now works full time between Memphis, St. Louis, Atlanta, and Los Angeles while he is currently working to achieve his dreams of sharing music with the world. Releasing music throughout the streets and over the internet has brought him to his current level of success. With his clever lyrics, concepts, storytelling ability, and smooth delivery, K.y.D. is destined to add his name to not only the noted list of great musicians whose careers were birthed in Memphis, but great musicians period.
