L’ANFARTI :The duo Bernardu PAZZONI and Doria GAVINI provides an example of an alternate strategy for utilizing the female repertoire and celebrating the traditionaly domestic nature of these songs. Theirs is a definitively more local and even personal representation of Corsica that also highlights the female voice.
Bernardu and his wife A.Doria have always been involved with making traditional music in Corsica. Mainly a violinist, Pazzoni also plays cetera and sings. Professionally, he is the director of the sound archive at the Musée de la Corse in Corte, where he manages the collections of Quilici and Laade, and has contributed his own field recordings . Having spent years learningviolin from old men in the villages, he has a special interest in Corsican dance music. His wife DORIA is an actress and comedienne, and the two have recently formed duo that began touring the island in the summer of 2004
The Duo presents their choice of repertoire in a way intended to illustrate its role in the rituals of everyday life in a traditional Corsican context. His wife’s goal is more personal, she describes the shows put on by the duo as “a true labor of memory.” She grew up in the Alta Rocca, a region in the extreme south of Corsica, in a family of muletiers. A king of nomadic profession, muletiers traveled between villages before roads were constructed, bringing goodsand spreading news between otherwise isolated communities. Muletiers were known to sing to pass the time, and their improvisations were accompanied by regular clanging of animal’s bells. Doria also grew up hearing her mother sing at weddings and improvise election songs (her mother now performs with a folkloric group for fun, while her father, also a singer, prefers to do so at home, a true reversal of the traditional musical roles). Remembering her mother’s improvisations and the rhythmic clamor of the mule’s bell, Doria says that her goal in her performances is “to bring back to my ear the songs of childhood.”
