Larry Wines, host/programmer/producer, music journalist, artist & festival consultant, editor
Influences
Oh, wow. The bright spirits of many, many positive and creative people I know and have known; and the same in those who I have yet to meet; and (due to chronologies and life spans) can never meet, but who have nonetheless touched me with their music and words and art and artistry. Once upon a time, I valued courage above other human traits. But for a long time now, I have valued kindness most of all. I am not a Buddhist, but I value the moment of the Namaste and the presence of that in each of us, whether or not we are aware of it.
Sounds Like
"On radio, Larry is Charlie Rose meets Ed Sullivan!" ~ We like that quote, but it leaves-out the spontaneous quick humor Larry brings to the air. So if it must be one of those combined comparison things, there's someone else in there, too. Like somebody from Monty Python. Every edition of the radio show brings lots of live (and lively) performance-interviews with stellar musicians. It's Acoustic Americana ~ blues-to-bluegrass-to-borderlands, cowboy-to-Cajun-to-Celtic-to-Cape Breton-to-Quebecois, new-old-trad-alt-post folk ~ and the best of today's singer-songwriter "acoustic renaissance" (a phrase he coined). There's plenty of acoustic indie, some signed artists (those who are really musicians, not overproduced clones with cyber pitch correction), and there are CD tracks, with music old and new, fresh and classic, that reliably, is skillfully done! It's always entertaining and fun. In print, Larry does the annual "Top Ten / Best of" each year for FolkWorks; you can read about the 2008 honorees at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35788/166 - - and read Larry's latest column at www.folkworks.org/content/viewcategorycur/89 - - there's also his comprehensive and acclaimed treatise on the "Cyber Acoustic Future (it's Not What You Think)," and the major changes coming to radio and the recording industry (and why "Big Music" can't control things anymore); that's at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35941/3176

and there’s also THIS benefit show, two nights before:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fri, Oct 23:
8 pm LAWRENCE LEBO plays a BENEFIT SHOW for Larry Wines and it’s her “Anniversary Show” with DENNY CROY; they’re accompanied by PHIL PARLAPIANO on accordion, and NICK KIRGO on guitar, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dirty Linen Magazine raves, “She sounds like what a daughter spawned by Ella Fitzgerald and Bob Wills might have.” Expect a fine and fun eclectic evening of traditional American music, as LAWRENCE LEBO brings her hybrid blues / jazz / folk songwriting and vocals to the warm and intimate concert venue. Accompanied solely by husband/bassist DENNY CROY for part of the evening, the bass and vocal duo amaze audiences with their intricate arrangements and full sound that’s earning them the nickname of “The World’s Biggest Little Band.” Tonight’s show celebrates the couple’s 23rd wedding Anniversary and is a benefit for Larry Wines. Lawrence and Denny are donating their artist's portions of the night to the fund for Larry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The duo is joined by special guest PHIL PARLAPIANO on accordion and NICK KIRGO on guitar. Folk darling Parlapiano has toured and recorded with John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Lowen & Navarro and Dave Koz. Kirgo has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” as a member of Lauren Adams band and, he performs as half the music duo, Otis. Ms. LEBO will perform selections from her album, “Don’t Call Her Larry, Volume 2,” including her sexy Christmas blues song, “(I’m Your) Christmas Present, Baby!”, as well as much loved selections from her “…Volume 1,” and selections from her upcoming new album.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ms. LEBO’s recordings have earned rave international reviews and college airplay, and have been featured on National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition” show, hosted by Liane Hansen, in addition to getting very complimentary ink here in the Guide.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Larry Wines is editor of the Guide, columnist and feature writer for FolkWorks, and producer and host of radio’s syndicated “Tied to the Tracks.” Following eye surgery (and no medical insurance) he is temporarily unable to use the computer to make a living. A portion of tonight’s proceeds go to Larry’s recovery fund. (Another benefit, with many artists performing, is Oct 25 at the Topanga Community House; see the section at the end of the Guide’s listings for the last day covered in this edition.) Tix for tonight’s show, $15.

ABOUT THESE BENEFIT SHOWS ~ A MESSAGE TO EVERYONE! ~ Anything you can do to spread the word is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!! We all want to make these two shows a BIG success for Larry!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Larry says about both concerts, “I'm very flattered and very grateful!” The producer expects the big show on October 25 will sell-out, so if you want to come, get tickets early. Contact marilynbabcock@mac.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And Lawrence Lebo has a good following, so THAT show may sell-out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s interesting asking Larry about the latest thing with his recovery, since he is so good with descriptions. He says the eye now has “funhouse mirror” vision. His left eye now sees things physically smaller than his right eye, and it sees everything above and to the right of what the right eye sees, so it's easy to feel seasick, and the seasick thing is especially bad with the computer. And if he wears his black pirate’s eyepatch (like he’s supposed to) and tries to use the computer, it makes his left eye ache under the patch and badly fatigues his right eye. Either way, we all work to keep him OFF the computer, since he isn’t supposed to be on it at all! ~ Sincerely, Bill & Becky, for Larry
Note that ALL the artists performing are not included in the story. SUSIE GLAZE & THE HILONESOME BAND are also performing, as is STEVE WERNER (of folk duo Fur Dixon & Steve Werner), plus, THE MELANIE KAREEM BELLYDANCERS. (Yep, music AND award-winning dance!)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HEY, FOLKS, we're INUNDATED with mail in too many places. Please do NOT use myspace mail to contact us! Instead, send all inquiries, comments, etc., to tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com. Thanks!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
HERE'S THE LONGTIME INFO ABOUT LARRY & "TIED TO THE TRACKS" ~
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“TIED TO THE TRACKS” on the radio: With live in-studio performances and a worldwide web listener base, "Tied to the Tracks" has been broadcast & webcast from Los Angeles as the only acoustic Americana radio show in L.A., featuring blues-to-bluegrass-to-borderlands, Cajun-to-cowboy-to-Celtic-to-Cape-Breton-to-Quebecois, new-old-trad-alt-post folk, and the best of the singer-songwriter "acoustic Renaissance." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Over 300 artists & bands have been guests for performance-interviews on the radio show, including indie artists and those on labels, GRAMMY and Juno winners and nominees, and winners of a cornucopia of the top music and songwriting awards within their genre. “Tied to the Tracks” has itself received honors and multiple awards. Many artists debut new music for “Tied to the Tracks” listeners, including albums that became GRAMMY and Juno nominees, and songs, instrumentals, and CDs that have gone on to win a vast variety of awards and recognitions.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The TELEVISION VERSION of “Tied to the Tracks” is coming. TttT was offered a weekly TV series, to debut in the Fall of 2008, but we delayed it. If that sounds crazy, we’ll tell you why: unless the radio show is in-place in the same markets, the TV show would not have a chance, since many of TttT’s performing guests are indie artists who do not yet have broad “name recognition.” But we already know that if radio listeners get familiar with a talented artist’s good music - their CD tracks on the radio - there is an audience waiting for their live performance - whether on the radio, on TV, or on a stage in a venue.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE, and its companion NEWS, both moved to Blogspot early in 2008, because Myspace won't accommodate files that big. Yep, the number of live performances of acoustic Americana music in and around Los Angeles, plus acoustic music festivals EVERYWHERE, continues to grow, and it seems like it’s exponential! (Welcome to the acoustic renaissance!) URLs for each edition of the GUIDE and the NEWS post on our myspace page. Or go explore (that’s always easy to do) at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com. The GUIDE lists events chronologically, many months in advance. We update often, adding literally hundreds of concerts, club gigs, coffeehouse shows, and more, together with residencies and recurring events, as these get close. You can send us your email address (regular email only) if you would like to get a brief notification each time we update the GUIDE or the NEWS. Title it “Put me on the list” and send that request to tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com. (We won’t share or sell your email address.)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
WHAT IS The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE? It’s so amazingly comprehensive that we stopped calling it a CALENDAR. It could be an almanac – except those are only published once a year, and this updates often. It’s a compendium, a chronicle, and - a guide, the name we picked. We changed the name because all those other calendars tell you who, where, and when, but ours also tells you WHAT. Nearly all the listings in the GUIDE have descriptions of the artist and their genre of music, and info like their recent awards, new CDs, landmark venues on their latest tour, etc. Sometimes we tell you a bit about the venue where they’re playing the show that’s listed, too.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Meanwhile, The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC NEWS has features and information for acoustic musicians, songwriters, and fans alike. Some of the content is fun, and some is what journalists call hard news. Some is aimed at offering examples of things that work well, to get you thinking about improvements to make in marketing your music, or seeking and booking gigs, festivals, etc. We strive to make all of it a worthwhile read, every edition. It’s posted separately from the calendar editions, and fresh editions of the “NEWS” post at least twice a month.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
There are old (really old) editions of the NEWS, still archived on our Myspace site, from the days before the size of posts were limited there. If you want to play music news archaeologist, use the "view all entries" button, then keep going into the past by using the "view OLDER blogs" button, as many times as it takes to get back to when Lassie was a little bitty puppy dog.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The show features live in-studio performance-interviews every week from touring and L.A.-based artists and bands. CD airplay includes new & classic roots Americana and lots of new & indie acoustic artistry for listeners to discover. Local fans of "Tied to the Tracks" enjoy waking up to the great acoustic sounds, while fans online report the joy of finding a new radio experience and hearing artists speak from the heart during the live segments. Drop a line at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com to say hello, and check back soon to learn where we will be available in syndication!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Host Larry Wines selects the music for the show, and he is also a songwriter, music festival emcee, and more.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Well, TIED TO THE TRACKS did not return to the airwaves in late 2008. We're still completing affiliate agreements and signing sponsors and advertisers. If you'd like to support the show financially, or become a sponsor, please contact us ASAP at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com. The show WILL RETURN SOON, all over the map (in addition to the web), on the RADIO and later, as a TV SHOW! More soon...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"Tied to the Tracks" is indeed headed for national syndication, after airing for three years on broadcast radio every Saturday, from 6-10 am, in Los Angeles. The popular FM broadcast / simulcast (named as part of "The Best of L.A." by Los Angeles magazine in 2006) was dropped by the station’s management immediately after it exceeded its quota (again) for pledge drive fund-raising for the public radio station that was then its broadcast home. That came when the station’s management realized the show is headed for national syndication. (Actually, the station knew for 2 years that was coming, so go figure.)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MUSIC SUBMISSION GUIDELINES As you can imagine, we continue to be overwhelmed with CDs by artists from all over the world, and as much as we’d like to support everyone, it’s really impossible. If you’re an artist looking to be included in the ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE, please spend a few minutes reading it, so you’ll know what to send us to include your listing. If you’re looking for airplay, we had been asking that you PLEASE LISTEN TO THE SHOW FIRST! For now, while we’re on hiatus, CAREFULLY read the following, and contact us if you think your music is a good fit for our format and content. “Tied to the Tracks” is the only ACOUSTIC Americana / acoustic renaissance radio show originating from Los Angeles. Yep, acoustic / rootsy, and our listeners are eclectic (NOT electric). If you send a death-punk-metal-electronica CD to us with one acoustic guitar cut, odds are we’ll pass. Even country rockers sometimes get upset that we can’t use their material. That means, for example, blues on a National, and bluegrass on a Martin or a Taylor are fine, but blues or bluegrass (or whatever) on a Strat are not. So, when you send a CD to us, here’s the deal:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~1) Please, e-mail us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com and ask for the mailing address. DO NOT throw something in the mail to the show’s former radio station, because we will NOT receive it that way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2) Regular CD’s only please, no MP3s or burned demos unless you ask us first. This is important because we want to be sure our listeners are able to buy your music someplace, and we want to help support your sales too!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~3) Include a post-it note with tracks you think would fit our format the best, AND include your current “one-sheet” so we can tell listeners about you and your music (if you don’t have a current one-sheet, and you should, for the sake of your career success, then take our advice and get one that does what it needs to do for you).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~4) Since you can’t listen to the show a couple of times right now before submitting, PLEASE read all the points here, in this big section of the page.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~5) Let us know if you’re playing anytime in the greater Los Angeles area. Tying airplay to your gigs is an important way to promote both you and your music, and we make every effort to do that!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~6) We need you to ask us before submitting, because you shouldn’t spend money sending music anywhere unless you get them to ask for it first, and partly because posting a mailing address is too much of an invitation to get blasted with who-knows-what in the snail mailbox. Sometimes DJs, Program Directors & mailing addresses change anyway, (like ours did) and we want to be sure we’re looking out for your stuff. And, sometimes things really do get lost in the mail, so if we know when you sent it, we know when to look. Sorry, nothing can be returned, and we cannot promise to play everything we get. But if we do play your music and you stay in touch, we’ll do our best to let ya know!
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...
Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
Larry, I hope you enjoyed my new CD! I want to personally invite you to my Birthday show at The Hotel Cafe on Aug 21st at 11pm. That's a Friday night. Hope you can make it man.
"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals,featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
I saw "The Soloist".I think the Soloist is a good movie.It's interesting to see the sites and people of LA in film.It was interesting to see but some one who has experienced a 12 step program like AA,I have some insights to social problems that the author seems to lack as a journalist.
Several things in the film bothered me. One, is the idea that the main character is "mentally ill",and the corollary that people on the streets are mentally ill. This bothered me because never is the idea of alcohol or drugs presented.Most everyone in a 12 step program like AA knows that people end-up on the streets because of alcohol and drugs.They know that as a result of working the 12 steps they have a chance at life.These factors are not presented as the problem or the solution being 12 step work. This is very troubling, that the author has no 12 step awareness.
Secondly,The author Steve Lopez the other main character presents a notion that Mr Ayers will be find if he is put on "meds" for two weeks, to begin with to change his situation.This notion that a pill or medication is going to "cure" mental-illness is wrong.If this were true there would not be any need for membership in the large number of 12 step programs,or for working the steps.Many persons in AA and other 12 steps program's have already taking "meds" seeking help but have found themselves in a 12 step program only being restored to sanity as a result of the steps.Then why does the film state that a person could be "cured" of mental-illness's by being put on "meds?"
It's like mixing oranges and apples together and expecting to get orange juice!Most people that come to AA or other 12 step programs are suffering from mental problems.And conversely most people who are put on "meds" are not cured of mental illness. The "meds" do not restore people top sanity. Medications only control behavior. The 12 ste
