Sounds of the City: Midpoint Music Festival 2006 City Beat (Cincinnati), by Mike Breen
"Talk about your cool hybrids. The Lab Rats work an amazing groove informed by the jammed-out Riff Rock of MC Brian Brown on electric guitar and the mad breakbeats and electronic touches of DJ Kelly Warner, a multi-instrumentalist with two turntables and a microphone (and a pedal steel and keys and congas). With Brown’s suburban-weary songs of everyday frustration and Warner’s broadly whacked musical accompaniment, the Lab Rats will be your new favorite experiment, particularly with their new album, Half Full Ashtrays, Half Empty Glasses."
More Than Hip Hop U Weekly, October 4th, 2006, Daniel Kirschenbaum
"Check out the Lab Rats live, and you’ll see more than just a DJ and an MC. K.W. (Kelly Warner) handles pedal steel, keys and conga duties, aside from manning his trusty turntables. Brian Brown, beyond being a gifted MC, shows himself to be an able guitarist."
We are self-released.
Since 03/04 when the band was formed, The Lab Rats have done what bands do- played a few hundred shows, argued with each other at 4am on Bowery sidewalks, shared bathrooms with the very gracious Digable Planets, slept at highway rest areas in various states, been kicked out of karaoke bars in Louisville for improvised Talking Heads covers, arrived at shows in tow trucks, cupped elbows with Chloe Sevigny, driven 5 hours to play for 5 people, used bacon strips to prove points, dressed and played as the White Stripes onstage, performed acoustic radio shows, left guitars in different towns across the Midwest, spent over $20 trying to beat the first level of donkeykong jr., had our plug pulled by a guitarist from ’Warrant’, sang ’Batman’ with Don B. at Bernie’s, pulled drunken yuppies from conga drums, used burritos as pillows, been compared to breakfast cereal on indie hiphop forums, driven around the entire Indianapolis outerbelt multiple times without noticing, joined in union worker strike drum circles, watched ambulances slide back down offramps due to nasty winter weather, played in strip clubs, biker bars, country-western bars, frathouses, blues bars, outdoor festivals, birthday parties, and much more. It’s all been quite lovely, really. < We both really appreciate the great times we’ve had with anyone who’s ever come to a show. Thanks for everything. Myspace’s shows listing function seems to be broken so disregard any show listings below if they show up in your browser. Thanks again.
