A cavern… A dirty dark and isolated hole, in wich you enter wondering what you will find at the very end of it… and you often have to search the entrance.
We’d been talking about pools, walls and rad spots for years, and it’s a fact, we almost don’t have any ride-able pools around here… So, as Marseille locals, we were riding the bowl of course, the “holenight bowl” too, and the 12’ vert ramp a friend owns in his backyard, but we were wanting something else, something fucking gnarly, something of our own, something that would fit with our desire for rad trannies… So, as we were talking about the lack of rad spots, we decided to build a wall ride somewhere.
We’ve been looking for an indoor place to do it for months so we could skate when it rains, but it wasn’t working.
One day, Nours, a friend who skates and spray paints, tells us about old abandoned warehouses where he goes to paint. The warehouses are lost in the suburbs of Marseille, completely forlorn and devastated. We discovered that a lot of painters know the place, they come from all over the country to paint here, so some painting are just amazing. They have huge walls, so sometimes they are more than 50 painters there, with music, dogs, booze and related stuff… They spend there week-end chilling and painting. That’s kind of cool.
The other thing that is rad, is that these warehouses are an ancient cement blocks factory, it used to be a quarry. All the materials are on site, dirt, stones, sand, metal things and shit that can be used to help the building. But the main problem is that these warehouses are on a private property and there is a fucking barrier, so you have to walk to the warehouse, which is fucked up when you have to carry cement bags and tools to work. We use motorbikes.
One of the warehouse still has a roof. The floor was covered by at least a foot of shit, like rusted spray cans, stones, sand, rusted parts of burnt cars, burnt bikes, glass, wood, whatever… Mayhem Land !! When we cleaned a bit we saw that under that shit, the floor was perfectly smooth and flat. It was the Grail! We decided it would be there.
The spot had two starts that didn’t work, because we didn’t give it enough energy and involvement. Then Pontus Alv did this amazing video “The strongest of the strange”… This video message was like “Hey dudes, no lame speeches, take a trowel and go for it!”. We were stoked, so after that we really started making it. We had no money for it, so we asked to people around to give us cement bags or old shovels, wheelbarrow, trowels, anything that could help… One night I went out to steal some cement bags on sites that were a bit isolated, but I got busted and I was lucky to go back home that night, the pigs were “comprehensive”…
The first thing we made was a quarter with an extension. We were carrying water in jerry cans, the cement bags on the tank of the motorbike, we were scratching the ground to find sand to do concrete. At night we would hide the tools under fallen pieces of the roof on the ground so nobody would steal them. We were feeling like kids building some caban...
We knew that the concrete wouldn’t stick on the flat surface of the floor when it links to the beginning of the transition. So we took a hammer and started to break the floor where the tranny begins… We have to say that it’s the hardest part we had to deal with, on a physical aspect : it is very long, it takes a lot of energy for just one part of the process and we ruined our hands. But it worked, we were amazed the day we skated it for the first time : it was rad as hell, kinked as fuck, rough as an alcoholic tongue, but it was our spot!
While we were finishing this quarter, we started to make a wallride in front of it. We learnt from the first experience, so we went faster and the result was much better. Jipé, who works in a supermarket, found big plates of wood, so we could use them to make most of the template work. Without this help, I still wonder how much time it would have taken to have the spot built. Thank you Jipé! But this time for the junction floor/tranny, we used a hammer with a pointed head. It was a bit better but still, we ruined our hands once again! We couldn’t find anybody with a generator powerful enough to make a pneumatic hammer work. And the renting of it was unthinkable. Any euro we could get would go to cement bags.
One day, while we were going up to the warehouse with a bunch of jerry cans full of water, we met some firemen. We met them some times before, they were curious to know what we were doing with our skateboards in such a place. They were coming on the site to practice, they set a little house on fire and they do training in it. So we talked a bit and they tripped on our project and they said we were crazy. As they saw that we were carrying fucking heavy cans of water, one of the chief came and told us : “C’mon, take our van, use it as much as you need…” and so here we are, driving the firemen van with a dozen of full cans in the back. At the end of that day, they came up to the spot and they were stoked that we had cleaned the place and built something to skate so far from everywhere. So we became friends and Fred and Jimmy, the chiefs, came with the water truck and filled like 5 or 6 old tanks we found on the site!! In one hour we had water for weeks… Thank you Fred and Jimmy !
We finally made the first wall and we started another one on the side with a little quarter between them. We bettered the method but we were still having problems when we were getting to the vertical. The concrete wouldn’t stick well because of its own weight, and we were still breaking the floor with hammers. Olive found a second wheelbarrow, a shovel and some trowels, it helped a lot. He also found an impressive quantity of metal for the rebar work. Thank you Olive!
Then we decided to make a bump between the quarter and the walls so we could get more speed without pushing all the time! The bump was really well finished, it was shining when the concrete was fresh. We were really proud because we felt that we were progressing in our skills. The next morning when we got back to check the work, some idiots had come during the night and had ruined the bump. We think they were some poets because they wrote “You stink” in the fresh concrete… We tried to solve it but it was too late, the junction were not drying well, and after some runs it was almost unskatable, it was making a step at the bottom of the bump. So the spot was not skatable, and we thought it was a good thing because people wouldn’t use it anymore while we would be continuing the work. We would fix the bump at the end of the whole work.
The next step was to make a corner wall. We talked about how to do it, what radius, what size, etc… Then Mehdi had the brilliant idea to make a bit of over-vert’ in the corner. Ok, but how to do it? I made a model of cardboard to visualize the steps of the making and so everybody would be able to say if it would work or not. But the model was looking more like a craddle. So why not make a craddle?
We started the craddle and it lasted 6 months to achieve it. We wanted to make a corner wall, but in the corner we would put the craddle.
We started with the wall rides on each side. For the craddle we built a negative formwork made of wood. Then we disassembled it, we carried it, and we remounted it on the spot. It would weight 200 kilos and we were 7 to set it up above the corner. The rebar work was going through the walls of the warehouse to the outside. Then we put concrete on the outside wall with a bunch of stones to fix it to the wall. And still no generator, but nothing would stop us.
Once the formwork was adjusted, we started to put concrete in it. Pail after pail, shovel after shovel, the craddle was being built. When we broke the formwork once the impressive mass of concrete was dry, we were stoked on the size of the thing, it was enormous!! We made the finishing coat in one day, and trust me we were a solid team because we made dozens of cement bags this day, all hand made! At the end of that day it was almost night, we were looking at the craddle and nobody could speak, we were done!! Thank you Plaisance Team, you did such a hard work.
We decided to remake totally the bump. We had to break it and it was a bad moment. But it’s a bad for a good. We remade it bigger and wider. We were still looking for a solution for the generator and the drill. One day, Mehdi was talking with Stephane André and he started to talk about the spot, then Steph said “But hey boys, I have a generator…” Gaabaa gaabaa hey!!! Then Jipé got a pneumatic hammer, and it was heaven. All went much faster and better. We put Epoxy resin on the junctions and the bump is solid as a rock.
Anybody who wants to skate there is welcomed, just come to Marseille, France, go to the bowl and ask the locals how to find the Cavern…

Une caverne… Un endroit sombre, un peu à l’écart, où l’on pénètre en se demandant ce que l’on va y trouver. Et bien souvent, il faut chercher pour en trouver l’entrée.
Ca faisait des mois qu’on parlait de pools, de spots rads, de walls, mais faut bien reconnaître qu’on n’est pas super fournis en pools skatables. Alors plutôt que de lâcher l’affaire, on s’est mis en tête de trouver un coin abandonné pour se construire un wall. En plus, Washington Street et Channel Street étaient les deux derniers spots DIY dont tout le monde parlaient, et ça entretenait toutes nos discussions.
On a cherché pas mal de temps sans trouver vraiment ce qu’on voulait.
Et puis un jour, Nours, un pote qui skate et qui graffe, me parle de hangars abandonnés où il va poser de temps en temps. Les bâtiments sont bien paumés mais totalement dévastés par des années de squats en tous genre et autres teufs sauvages. Pour atteindre la dalle en béton du sol, il y avait pas loin de 30 cm de merdes en tous genres : bombes de peintures rouillées, sable, gravats, carcasses de voitures, cyclos brûlés, des structures en métal abandonnés… Bref, Dévast’Land !
Le gros problème c’est que c’est sur un terrain privé, et on ne peut pas y accéder en voiture, ce qui nous a pas mal emmerdé au début. Par contre, c’est une ancienne fabrique de parpaing, une ancienne carrière. Ce qui fait qu’il y a tout sur place, gravats, terre, sable, il ne manque que l’eau et le ciment. On était obligé de fabriquer le spot en béton pour être sûr de ne pas se faire détruire ce qu’on voulait skater. Et puis le béton, c’est quand même trop bon à skater !
On avait commencé deux fois à rassembler de la terre et à nettoyer, mais on y avait pas mis l’énergie nécessaire et ça n’a pas abouti.
Et puis il y a eu la vidéo de Pontus, « The stronguest of the strange ». On a embrayé pour de bon juste après la sortie de la vidéo.
Petit à petit, avec les moyens du bord, on a réussi à construire un quarter avec une extension. On montait l’eau dans des bidons, les sacs de ciment sur le réservoir de la moto, on grattait le sol autour des bâtiments pour trouver le sable pour faire le mortier, le soir on planquait les quelques outils qu’on avait sous des tôles pour pas se les faire piquer… Pour que le béton accroche au sol, il nous a fallu picoter la dalle. On avait un marteau, alors on l’a fait au marteau. Bonjour les cloques ! Quelques trous dans le sol en s’imaginant que ça suffirait.. Tu parles !
Et puis pendant qu’on finissait le quarter, on a commencé à faire un wall en face. Les techniques de fabrication étaient bien meilleures, et on est allé plus vite et le résultat était nettement mieux. Jipé, qui bosse à Carrouf’, nous a dégoté les pires planches d’aggloméré pour pouvoir tailler les gabarits des courbes et faire les coffrages pour le béton. Sans lui on aurait vraiment trop galéré pour trouver autant de planches de cette taille et de la bonne épaisseur. Yes Jipé ! Par contre pour picoter le sol, cette fois on y est allé avec un marteau avec un bout pointu, c’était un peu mieux mais ça restait quand même l’horreur. La dalle est hyper dense et très solide, et on s’est ruiné la santé des mains pour casser le béton sur la profondeur souhaitée…n'est-ce pas Mehdi? On a commencé à penser sérieusement à l’achat d’un groupe et d’un marteau piqueur, mais tous les sous qu’on récoltaient partaient dans le ciment.
Un jour qu’on galérait avec nos bidons pleins d’eau, on voit la barrière ouverte et, près des bâtiments, des pompiers en train de s’entraîner. Ils mettent le feu à une ancienne maison et ils l’éteignent, des trucs de pompiers quoi ! Comme ils nous voient galérer, et qu’ils savent ce qu’on fait et qui on est parce qu’on les a déjà croisés quelques fois avant, un des gradés nous propose tout simplement de prendre une de leur fourgonnette pour monter les bidons ! Banco, nous voilà copains avec les pompiers, qui, luxe ultime, viennent de temps en temps avec leur camion citerne jusqu’au spot pour nous remplir des gros tonneaux abandonnés ou récupérés qu’on stocke à l’intérieur du bâtiment !! Gros bravo à Fred et à Jimmy pour leur aide incroyable et leur compréhension.
Finalement, le wall est fini et on attaque un deuxième wall à côté, avec une petite courbe en décalé au milieu. Les techniques s’améliorent encore, mais on galère toujours lorsqu’il s’agit de faire tenir le béton sur la verticale et on a toujours pas solutionné le problème du picotage ! Entre temps, Olive nous a dégoté une deuxième brouette, des truelles et une pelle. On est mieux équipés et ça fait quand même une différence ! Il nous trouve aussi un rouleau énorme de ferraille pour mettre dans le béton, ça aussi ça a franchement aidé !
On décide de faire une bosse entre le quarter et les walls pour prendre plus de speed pour passer d’un wall à l’autre sans poser le pied par terre. La bosse une fois terminée est franchement nickelle, elle n’a pas un coup de truelle ! Le lendemain on monte voir comment elle sèche et là, c’est le drame : des blaireaux sont passés dans la nuit et ont saccagé le boulot. Visiblement il s’agit de poètes, parce que dans le béton frais ils ont écrit « Tu pues », il y a des traces de pas, des trucs plantés dans le béton… On essaie de récupérer ce qu’on peut mais le mal est fait et le béton sèche mal. De plus, on se rend compte que le picotage n’est pas suffisant en profondeur, la bosse devient rapidement inskatable. Les jonctions avec le sol ne tiennent pas et ça fait une pire marche. Il en va de même avec le quarter… inskatable aussi.
L’étape suivante est de faire un corner wall dans un coin du bâtiment. On discute des meilleures façons de s’y prendre pour faire la vert’ dans le coin. Et Mehdi propose de faire un peu d’over-vert’ dans le corner. L’idée est plaisante mais comment faire ? Déjà qu’on galère pour faire des walls… Mat fait une maquette en carton pour visualiser les étapes de la construction. Mais sa maquette ressemble plus à un craddle qu’à de l’over-vert’. On décide alors de faire comme la maquette mais en grandeur nature, on va se faire un craddle !!
Commence alors la construction du craddle qui va nous prendre pas loin de 6 mois !
On commence par les walls sur les côtés et par le corner, le tout est bétonné grossièrement pour ne pas que ça bouge. Pour le craddle, un coffrage en bois est réalisé, démonté, transporté en kit jusqu’au spot, puis remonté sur place. Il doit peser dans les 200 kgs, et on s’est mis à 7 pour le monter sur le chassis au dessus du corner. On fait un ferraillage qui descend jusqu’au sol pour soutenir la structure de béton et qui traverse les murs. On a percé les murs jusqu’à l’extérieur pour accroché le ferraillage et on rebétonné de l’extérieur pour souder le tout ! Chaque fois on picote une heure ou deux, parce que c’est très long et très chiant mais indispensable comme boulot.
On coule le béton dans le moule et petit à petit, seau après seau, on finit par obtenir ce qu’on voulait. On démoule le craddle et là on hallucine sur la taille du machin… On a fait la couche de lissage en une seule fois pour ne pas avoir de jonction, et ce jour là on était un sacrée équipe, parce qu’on y a passé des dizaines de sacs de ciment , et on en a bien chié pour aller mettre le béton sur le haut du craddle!!! Merci au Plaisance Crew, franchement chapeau les gars !
On décide que la bosse doit être refaite et qu'il faut redaire la jonction du quarter avec le sol. On casse complètement la bosse, ce qui nous a bien fait chier !! Mais c’était un mal pour un bien. On a bien refait le travail de ferraillage, et surtout, on l’a faite plus grosse et plus large.
On cherchait toujours à trouver une solution pour le picotage, et un jour que Mehdi parlait du spot avec Steph André, il nous dit : « Mais les gars j’ai un groupe si vous avez besoin… » Et hop, nous voilà avec le groupe tant espéré. Jipé nous dégotte le marteau piqueur. Je me rappelle du premier coup de piqueur, j’ai éclaté de rire tellement c'était facile par rapport à la technique préhistorique du marteau à bout pointu! On lui a mis le compte à la dalle !!!
La bosse est donc refaite mais avec une autre méthode pour le béton, ce qui donne de bien meilleurs résultats. On a passé une couche de résine époxy sur la jonction avec le sol pour que l’humidité ne s’y infiltre plus et ça aussi c’est beaucoup mieux. Par contre on s’est saigné pour acheter la résine !

"
