"...America's Finest Chamber Orchestra. And if that sounds like some local chamber of commerce boosterism, I assure you it isn't. The only Southern California cultural institutions for which I have that kind of blind, uncritical affection are the Dodgers and Disneyland." -Jim Svejda

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1968 as an artistic outlet for the film and record studios’ most gifted musicians. The Orchestra’s artistic founder, cellist James Arkatov, envisioned an ensemble that would allow these conservatory-trained players to balance studio work and teaching with pure artistic collaboration at the highest level. With the financial backing of philanthropist Richard Colburn and managerial expertise from attorney Joseph Troy, who also became the Orchestra’s first president, LACO presented its first performances in the fall of 1969.
Since then, the 40-member Orchestra has earned a reputation as one of the foremost ensembles of its kind in the world and has been hailed as “America’s finest chamber orchestra” by respected music critic Jim Svejda of KUSC. Renowned pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane has led the group since 1997 and has continued the standard of excellence set by the Orchestra’s first four music directors, Sir Neville Marriner, Gerard Schwarz, Iona Brown and Christof Perick.
Praised by the Los Angeles Times as “…a shining feature in L.A.’s cultural landscape…,” the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra is lauded for its virtuosic music making, dynamic programming and signature personal style. The Orchestra performs repertoire ranging from Baroque masterpieces to newly commissioned works and is recognized for championing young artists on the brink of major careers, as well as working with some of today’s leading artists.
The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra maintains its local presence with an annual home season of 14 Orchestral Series concerts at two historic theaters, the Alex Theatre in Glendale and UCLA’s Royce Hall; its acclaimed Baroque Conversations series at Zipper Concert Hall; a series of three Family Concerts at the Alex Theatre; and Westside Connections, a series of three chamber music concerts, at The Broad Stage of the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center. Highlights of the 2009-10 season include:
• a one-night-only “Discover” Concert exploring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 at the Ambasssador Auditorium with Jeffrey Kahane as musical tour guide
• a performance of violinist Daniel Hope’s arrangement of the Schulhoff double concerto with Kahane
• a look at how music inspires creativity through the Westside Connections series.
• a gala fundraiser with Chris Thile and his band, Punch Brothers, as guest artists
• the screening of Buster Keaton’s silent gem, The Cameraman, with live orchestral accompaniment at LACO’s 21st annual Silent Film Celebration.
Nationally recognized for its support of new music by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), LACO has forged meaningful relationships with noteworthy composers throughout its 41-year history. The Orchestra’s 2009-10 season introduces audiences to this year’s Sound Investment composer George Tsontakis and new composer-in-residence Derek Bermel. Premieres by both artists are featured during the season, along with the California premiere of a mandolin concerto by Chris Thile.
The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra was also honored with The Recording Academy® President’s Merit Award at the Grammy Salute to Classical Music® in 2009 for its continued support and dedication to young musicians and families in the Los Angeles area, and a strong commitment to making classical music accessible to everyone. LACO’s Meet the Music program reaches thousands of elementary school students most of whom have never experienced a classical concert before.
By special invitation, the Orchestra has performed in Carnegie Hall’s Chamber Music series under the direction of Jeffrey Kahane and in South America, Europe and Japan. On its most recent tour of European music capitals including Paris, Vienna, Berlin and San Sebastián, LACO garnered praise for its “orchestral athleticism and dynamism” and the “tremendous precision of [its] ensemble playing” (Die Welt).

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Message to the World:

It can be so tempting to just go through the motions sometimes... especially when you're living a dream... or (in the oh too common scenario) dreaming about chasing your dreams while chasing the means to acquire them... or the next best thing... or maybe just anything…

Yes, I know that we are tried and tired, notwithstanding all the hope that's been goin' around. Yes, I know that we are searching for an intangible something meaningful to do... the next stage in human evolution maybe… revolution... but without the circles.... hoping to enjoy that sacred cycle in the pursuit of happiness.

...how about finishing what we've started?

Each one: get up, and make it happen; be your own Obama.

-Ozie

P.S.
