Founded in March 2007, MAWU is an all-female urban dance company whose mission is to embody strong, positive images of women in the urban dance community, and to create fierce and creative works that will both educate and inspire new audiences. In addition, MAWU’s goal is to challenge young, growing female artists through educational workshops, interactive seminars and studio classes demonstrating strong technique and historical context. More than just a unique group of house dancers, MAWU’s strength lies in the diversity of its members, all of whom represent different backgrounds, ethnicities and performance genres ranging from classical (modern, ballet) to traditional (African, Caribbean) to club (hip hop, house, freestyle). Their primary medium is house music and dance, however MAWU’s movement style can best be described as “urban fusion” because its members seek to express movement using a clear vocabulary as it has been and continues to be developed in the urban underground setting, while drawing on both classical and traditional techniques. The freedom to create, express and share is a gift that was given by New York’s underground house community to all of MAWU’s members, and it is in this same spirit that MAWU was born.
Through their explosive performances, MAWU creates a platform for dancers of all ages, races, and genders to celebrate diversity, fight for the rights of dancers, and show support for performing arts. The freedom to create, express and share is a gift that was given by New York’s underground house community to all of MAWU’s members, and it is in this same spirit that MAWU was born. Since their March 2007 debut at New York’s monthly House Dance Conference, MAWU has followed up with special appearances at The Melting Pot NYC’s tribute to women’s month, the annual Winter Music Conference in Miami, ¡Globaile!, the Dance For Peace fundraiser, Brooklyn Mecca’s Female All-Stars Jam, Mr. V’s Welcome Home Album Release, and House Dance International, New York’s 1st annual house dance festival. MAWU continues to take this scene by storm while inspiring dancers across the globe.
