Strictly speaking, Ladybird is a guitar pop project spearheaded by wandering French twentysomething Victor Crespi, but really, that barely starts to tell the tale. In the last four years or so, Crespi and an ever-swelling and contracting band of helpers have gallvanted across land, air and sea, shining full-beam rays of melody into gladdened eyes and ears across the USA, Canada, South America, Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe (Crespi himself currently divides his time between Paris and rural Morocco). A DIY rock ‘n’ roll dream, if you like...but more than that, Ladybird’s musical travels have been a genuine celebration of the wild, questing joy of being young and free, a feeling that courses through Crespi’s songs – which now, after a few years worth of international seasoning, pack a sharper, more irresistable pop punch than ever.
The “Silver Boat” EP was recorded in New York in May 2008, the sweet fruits of one of Ladybird’s many rambling, off-the-cuff adventures on the road. Having played a low-key house show in Jersey City, the band were approached by an impressed onlooker from Studio 4 of the world-famous Manhattan Center, who was moved to offer them a recording session on the spot – the chance to have their music channeled through a desk previously graced by Bob Dylan, Bjork and Timbaland among others. Naturally, little persuasion was required. Seizing the chance to render a handful of recently-written piano songs on the studio’s huge, pristine Steinway, Ladybird emerged with their strongest suite so far: dreamy, bittersweet hooks that recall the brightest shades of nineties Scottish pop heroes like Teenage Fanclub and Belle & Sebastian are grazed by swathes of suitably Arthur Russell-esque cello, and Crespi’s velvetine strokes on those hallowed ivories mark the sound of a songwriter blooming before you like the grand old tree he dreams of being on “Cherry Blossom Boy”. Ladybird sound right at home in their grand studio surroundings on “Silver Boat”...although don’t go thinking this is some new, ‘mature’ musical direction: the only way this band are heading is forwards, forever young and free, forever chasing the next cloudless sky.

The idea was conceived, the set was built and was all shot under 24 hours, just because we could.

Not that I think Ladybird have any kind of mental abnormality; but they seem to live in a kind of anything-possible, reality-is-what-you-make-it kind of world. They defy reason."
