Ladyfest Manchester 2008's Interests
|
| General | My name is Susan and I was one of the organisers of Ladyfest Manchester 2008 with a wonderful bunch of people. I am currently doing doctoral research into Ladyfest networks and attempting to build an archive of resources and information on Ladyfests that I will hopefully be able to share with the wider community.
I would be very happy and grateful if you wanted to share any information you may have, in particular when and where the festivals have taken place and any programmes of events that list all the activities provided, including music, workshops, and talks. Please feel free to share anything that you think made your Ladyfest special.
I will be sure to credit anyone that sends me information and if you’d rather stay anonymous then that’s okay too.
In the meantime I am interested in finding out about up and coming Ladyfests in the UK and Spain and I’m hoping that you will consider becoming an active member of the research process.
I believe in the Ladyfest ethos and that trying to capture some of its magic for future generations is important. In doing so, and with your help, I am hoping to raise the profile of feminist research within the social sciences which, like women in music and culture, is often marginalized.

Thanks for visiting our Myspace page. For anyone reading this who is unsure of what a Ladyfest is, it is a festival which promotes and celebrates women in arts and music.
It was and is an opportunity for anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, background or ability to become involved in organising a safe, supportive and inclusive, autonomous, non-profit and
non-hierarchical event and to have some fun and make some friends along the way!
We provided spaces for as many different kinds of expression as possible, there was music, art, comedy, film, theatre, poetry, dancing and workshops on a wide range of topics.
Why Ladyfest?
Because, unfortunately, many female musicians, artists, writers and performers of all kinds can still find themselves marginalised. Female or female fronted bands are often still seen as something of a novelty in the mainstream indie world and many female artists and performers can be labelled as 'special interest'. The world of music in particular remains very male dominated, despite the existence of endless incredible female artists. Ladyfest seeks to redress this balance by focussing on female creativity and giving women the opportunity to showcase their talents and have their voices heard in a totally supportive environment.
