GeneralFeminism, Womanism, Activism, Independent Media, Radical Academia, Radical Motherhood, Do-it-youself vaginal inspections, Protests, Reproductive Rights, Art, Film, Music, Culture, Workshops, Performance, Burlesque, Theater, LGBT Awareness, Anti-Violence, Baking, Stitch 'n Bitch, Zines, Environmental Protection, Idiot-Proofing the White House

We met this artist at the Allied Media Conference in 2005... I think she counts as an "interest"

Someday we'd love to meet Ain't Jamama! Enjoy images of commodified mammyisms turned on the ear.

MusicOne of our coolest events invovled Gaye Adegbalola with Roddy Barnes... if you don't know who Gaye is, FIND OUT NOW!! Music featured during the 2005 fest: The Rememberings, Drew Miller Davis, Marsha Bradee, Broadband, Da Lyrica, Donna Magavero, Sarah Asher, The Blue Belles (Eve Warnock), Fat Girls By The Snack Table, Blue Umbrellas, Red Dahlia, The Cinema Eye, Pamela Means, Malachi, Ranier Maria, Tracy Walker, Burning Sage,

General stuff we dig: of course the "godmother" difranco, bitch n' animal, the butchies, fruit, boris, emmie lou harris, laurie anderson, nellie mckay, tracy + the plastics, the gossip, ladytron, sleater-kinney, aqui, p j harvey, sara jones, sonic youth, the yeah yeah yeahs, slumber party, the bangels, lover lover, glass candy, bikini kill, superduper, elastica, scrawl, le tigre, frostiva, ember swift, peaches, madonna, joan jett, bjork, cat power, veruca salt, and so much more. didn't see your favorite? don't worry... this changes all the time.

We made a new friend recently that is awesome... The Females of Hip Hop. It's a "herstory" of hip hop, and a resource for women in hip hop to support one another. Get yourself schooled: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=105226659
Check this shit out... righteous anger that really upset one of our myspace buddies. Sorry we can't all sing "My Name is Luca" forever.

This here is our buddy Alyson's video. Enjoy!

MoviesIt's worth mentioning that S.I.R. Video has been very generous in the past, allowing us to publicly screen their films for fundraising purposes. Check out P.M.S. Media for some excellent indie docs. Have you seen "Not For Sale"? It's a doc about the 1970s feminist art movement, and a MUST if you consider yourself at all arty.

Filmmakers we've screened in 2005: Hallie Bourne, Hristina Panovska, Penny Lane, Maria Takacs, Katrin Kremmler, Sue Rumph

General stuff we've seen and enjoyed... Queen Christina, Hedwig, Watermelon Woman, Daughters of the Dust, Lust in the Dust, Boys Don't Cry, The Royal Tennenbaums, Go Fish, Iron Jawed Angels, Control Room, Hook or by Crook, In the Company of Wolves, anything with zombies in it, Wild Zero. Have you seen "Stacy"? It will make your eyes cross. We also like movies made by Lizzie Borden. Some of us liked "Tank Girl" while others are bored by boobies.
TelevisionMartha Stewart shows. ummm... someone else wrote that. We're conflicted about TV. Many of us like reality stuff, are addicted to Lost, can't get enough of Passions, see themselves in the L-Word. Personally, i heart jon stewart, colbert, and monty python re-runs, Battlestar Gallactica and Dead Like Me. We'd be fucked without Lucille Ball. Did someone say "AB FAB"? We miss Xena and Buffy. I'm glad no one remembers Colista Flockhart. You gotta give props to Oprah, Ellen, and Rosie, Will n'Grace, Queer Eye. He is a terrible feminist, but we miss Dave Chapelle. And it's about time Margaret Cho got her fabulous ass back on TV. Why are none of us watching that show about a female president?
Personally again, Golden Girls and Laverne and Shirley re-runs aside, I'd like to detonate the Lifetime channel, the network for victims (we're SURVIVORS, baby!) Oxygen channel holds no appeal... are we not the target audience somehow? WTF?
BooksHoly poo... this would take forever. Read everything with a critical eye, and knowledge of the when's and why's of it's writing. Almost all of our "heros" wrote something... start with them. For what it's worth, if "art" is your thing, start with The Power of Feminist Art edited by Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard. Both Coco Fusco and Ella Shohat have written eloquently on colonialism, feminism and art.

If you're a writer or spoken word performer, there's this really cool resource for getting your stuff on tour! Check out Let's Do It on the Road .

We at casa de Ladyfest O also believe in laughing... your feminist comic book intake is a must. Check out Mikhaela Blake Reid, Jennifer Camper, and of course Alison Bechdel!
Heroesmy mother and her mothers, Leslie Feinberg, "The Lavender Menace", Audre Lorde, Coco Fusco, Patricia Williams, Adrian Piper, "Women in Black", P.M.S. Media, Catherine Opie, Tee A. About me:
LADYFEST OHIO 2007 MINIFEST THANKS EVERYONE WHO SHARED THEIR ENERGY TO PARTICIPATE OR ENJOYED THE SHOW!
Yeah, our fest may have been wee, but it was replenishing and amazing to be together again with like-minded women and men and those embodying the spectrum inbetween those two poles. *****************************************************************************************

WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT? THE MISSION...

Ladyfest Ohio is a not-for-profit feminist arts and activism festival based in Columbus, Ohio. We've held amazing fests in both 2004, 2005, and 2007, and organized smaller events throughout 2006. The festival is/has been dedicated to promoting the artistic talents and political goals of ladies (past, present, and future), and our definition of "women" is vast enough to include our trans friends. We're part of a much larger grassroots movement that has blossomed to international proportions, but there is no "Ladyfest HQ". For the history of Ladyfests in general, or to find out if a Ladyfest plot is hatching in your town (including South America, Australia and Europe!) visit ladyfest.org.

Ladyfest Ohio is an all-inclusive, women-run event, and all are welcome to attend. The festivals have included workshops, film/video, music, visual arts, performance and more; our smaller events are just kid-sisters to the big-ass fest you've come to expect from midwestern feminists.

We're nonprofit! All of our moolah goes to the Central Ohio Abortion Access Fund and the Girlz Rhythm and Rock Camp. Ask us about these groups! Sometimes we throw smaller events for other fundraising purposes; many events in 2006 benefitted local activist/musician Donna Mogavero to help defray medical costs from an injury incurred during a performance. A big part of our activism is anti-capitalistic in nature... it's important to us that any money generated go right back into our community.
*****************************************************************************************

MORE ABOUT THE GIRLZ RHYTHM N' ROCK CAMP

Ladyfest Ohio beneficiary the Girlz Rhythm n' Rock Camp 2007 was held July 23rd-Aug. 4th and is over for the year. Special thanks to everyone who came out to East Village to see the grrlz in action on August 4th! This is a grassroots, women owned, organized, and mentored camp for girls 10-18 to expose them to music and help them "come to voice". Past mentors have included Donna Mogavero, Waru Cleveland, Katie Reider, Tracy Walker, Sarah Asher, Leah and Melissa of Sacred Fiction, local drum goddess Lois, and many, many, many more.

If you've got a grrrl on your hands between the ages of 10 and 18 who might want to get musical, send her on down! If you'd love to send your grrrl, but don't have the cash, tuition assistance and scholarships are available (this is where the LFO dollars come into play). If you'd like to learn more about mentoring at the camp, visit the website... we always need help. One other way just regular folks who may not have time to volunteer can help support the camp is by donation of music gear, sound equipment, and art supplies. We will find creative uses for your old stuff... just let us know what ya got!
*****************************************************************************************

An important component of Ladyfest Ohio is our pro-choice activism. We sincerely respect every woman's perspective regarding complex issues of reproductive rights. However, our reproductive rights in Ohio are still in dire straights. Our state ranks in the bottom lowest in pregnancy prevention and education. It's important that folks affiliated with us know that if you're runnin' with Ladyfest O, you're going to be associated with pro-choice issues.

We need to keep music alive in Dayton! If you're a musician, come by and sign up, or just come by, have a drink, and watch! It'll be worth your while!

Hi!

Turns out, thanks to the sweet Cherry, I will be playing at Winan's Fine Chocolates and Coffee by the Rusty Bucket near the Dayton Mall on Saturday June 21st. However, I would like to find a kind talented someone to play a short 30 minute set before me, as I am looking to support any and all local music.

Please drop me a line via my space or send me an e-mail at mandy.jewell33@gmail.com for more details.

Thanks.

Love, beauty, and music...always,

Mandy*

PS. I do not discriminate. However, I would like to try and find someone who needs the exposure. I like to lend a hand when I can.
